A gay guy’s perspective on Phil from Duck Dynasty.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.  I’m gay.  Every time I mention that in a blog a few people message me saying “I didn’t know you are gay,” and I want to unfriend them…so yeah I’m gay…and here is my take on this controversy.

Let’s start with what appears to be a little known fact.  Phil is from Louisiana.. and is a redneck. Shocking I know! So if that didn’t give you some sort of insight into his line of thinking before he made his comments…well…bless your heart.  Louisiana has never been the nation’s beacon of progressive human rights and rednecks still fly the “heritage not hate” flag.  Anytime you have to defend something by saying it doesn’t represent hate, that should be a cue to stop flying it.  (My swastika doesn’t represent hate either) ((sarcasm))

Let’s also point out that this is a reality show and therefore it should not be scripted…let me repeat, it is a REALITY SHOW! Phil was never elected by anyone to speak for anyone…he is a private citizen that a whole lot of other private citizens like to watch on tv…If Phil were some elected official I would be the first in line complaining. But he isn’t. He represents a group of people who are known for their phobias…of black people, showers, the English language, indoor plumbing…among other things…so why are we surprised he hates gays?  If you are outraged that he is on tv after saying what he said, try watching Fox News for more than 3 minutes…

If you are a Christian, then you should be well aware of a few things.  First and foremost, you are not to judge others…you are to love them as yourself.  Christianity is about love, peace, doing good in the world, hope, and faith. It is also true, according to the Bible, that we are all sinners.  You, me, Phil–everyone. So his statement was factual, to a Christian reading a single verse in the Bible…being gay is a sin. What he failed to mention is that EVERYTHING you do is pretty much a sin.  That is why you constantly ask for forgiveness as a Christian.  One sin is just as bad as the other.  There is no sin scale.  Phil lusting over Hillary Clinton would have the same ramifications as me lusting over a man.  Me cutting my hair will get me into hell just as fast as me sleeping with a guy who has the same hair cut.

Here’s where I stand on this.  In America we all have the right to our opinions, especially as it relates to religion.  Me judging his views of what is and is not a sin is no more fair and right than him judging who I love.  I actually think God would not have made me gay just to send me to hell.  I think God, my God at least, is a little more loving and caring than that.  I think just because the person I love is a man, it does not mean that love is a sin…but I digress.  Here in America we all the the right to our opinion.  We also have the right to change the channel.  If I do not agree with Phil then I will not watch his show…buy his merchandise…or be his friend on Facebook?  Who cares what a redneck in the swamp thinks about me…further more, who didn’t see that coming.

This country is going to hell with political correctness.  Kids expect a trophy for last place today…and God forbid a kid get a bruise on a playground. We have become a nation of babies who get our feelings hurt that the left said this or the right said that…that someone said Christmas instead of holiday. We all need to grow up.

Tolerance cannot and should not be forced. What A&E has done by suspending him is made him the victim.  That is wrong.  Phil isn’t the one denied rights daily in this country.  Phil isn’t the one that is persecuted by right wing nut jobs constantly.  Let Phil put his “God Hates Fags” sign up…and attend Westboro Baptist Church…I’m cool with that…it’s a free country.  Let me hate him.  Don’t put him in a position where I feel like defending him.  A&E has giving Fox News and Rush Limbaugh a talking point about how Freedom of Speech is under attack.  That’s not cool.

So…let’s put Phil back on the air…and let his rating drop.  Let all of his advertisers pull funding…and let’s do this the American way…you know…using Chinese money. Let’s focus on real issues…poverty…a President who is constantly breaking the law…elected officials saying worse things about gays than this…Let’s stop getting distracted by these inflated stories about people who really do not matter to most of us.  People who really and truly have no influence on our lives.

So, Phil, I’m sorry you don’t care for gays.  I have a feeling that if someone close to you were gay and had the courage to admit it to you, your views would change. Americans are so scared of what we don’t understand.  I assure you, Phil, no gay guy wants to sleep with you…so you are safe there.  Thankfully, much like homophobia, I assure you that it is not contagious.  If it were, gays would camp out at frat houses and construction sites.  So, align yourself with Westboro if you want…and I’ll just change the channel.

To my gay friends that are offended…stop whining, toughen up, and work on changing minds…your status updates are making us all look bad.  Worry more about what is happening in the Capital than in the Louisiana swampland.

  1. Your anti-Southern comments are MORE offensive than what the gentleman from Louisiana had to say. The pot and the kettle are both black.

      1. Wow…if you lack the mental ability to phrase a factual reply just insult them in a seemingly intelligent way. You smell of fail. Your reply says everything. You are narrow minded and anti anything you disagree with. I have traveled the entire USA and I can say that the Southern states are much more tolerant of people who are different than the northern. Your ignorance is common. Read more and talk less.

      2. I only have one thing to disagree with, James. If you read what he said, you will find that Phil did not ONCE say he hated gays. He merely asked a question. He asked why a man would prefer another mans behind to a womans front, that’s all. The word “hate” was never mentioned OR implied.

    1. I’m straight and from the south. I don’t find his opinions hurtful, just opinions. Like james was trying to say, toughen up and take as a grain of salt. I love mudding, guns and living in the woods as much as the next guy but I don’t care how anyone else feels about it, or who your attracted too.

  2. Thank you! I am happy to read that you and I agree that everyone needs to toughen up and stop whining.. I am a christian heterosexual southerner who happens to agree with you. I don’t practice or condone your choices but honey, your choices are yours and none of my business to judge. I have enough repenting to do on my own mistakes, so I don’t want to add judging your life to my plate.. like you said, there is no sin scale, and sin is sin. All the folks that will judge me and gossip about my comments need to remember that.. Blessings to you James.. Have a MERRY Christmas and a Happy New Year! Debb

    1. Well stated, Debb! Thank you & Ditto from a Northern Bible-Believing (not just parts taken out of context) previously divorced-now widowed-finally dating-Christian woman, who hates her own sins first, but not the sinners. (If I did, my God-son would be in that crowd along with many former students & friends, too).
Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year! ❤

  3. I get to pick and choose what I like about your blog, because, well,l “yay, America!” I agree that A&E made a hero out of an ignorant redneck, and that did “the cause” no good; all they’ve done is elevated him to the Paula Deen/Chick-Fil-A status amongst the white heterosexual “southern strategized” conservatives.

I am not offended that Phil is against gay marriage; not a surprise to just about anyone. However, lumping us in with prostitutes and animal fornicators is beyond the pale, and using “religious freedom” as cover for such is a cop-out.

Phil said some absurd things about “the blacks” too, and there’s not much being made of that (particularly by the right wing); wonder why that is? Could it be there’s no Bible verse to explain it away?

Yeah, they were happy “back then” alright; mostly for show, so they wouldn’t wind up swinging from a rope off a hickory branch.

Cute how ya got your dig at the President in, though. Nice touch. Not much to it, but still .. points for “flair.”

Like K.P., I did think one could have (not me, but others) taken offense to your generalizations about southern people. I mean, we’re all guilty of cracking jokes at the expense of others, after all, I suppose, but …

    1. As a transplanted “damn Yankee” (though I’ve been here long enough I think it’s at least said affectionately) living in North Georgia, let me be the first to tell you that STEREOTYPES are STEREOTYPES for a reason. Does everyone match a stereotype? Of course not. (Some of them have the dubious distinction of being transplants like myself, which accounts for their impeccable grooming and firm grasp of both spoken and written English.) Some of them are just better educated than that, even down here – and even considering UGA was /proud/ of the fact that they made the top ten “party schools” list. And sometimes, it’s a matter of Southern pride to be “better than that”. But there are still pockets where the stereotypes are so thick you can slice them with a pretty dull butter-knife. Worse, (or possibly better, depending on who you are and what your viewpoint is) these people are /happy/ the way they are, and attempting to get them to change is kind of like being covered in honey and trying to convince a pissed off grizzly bear that you aren’t dinner.

As I’m sure you’re by and far NOT completely guiltless of making sweeping blanket statements, let me remind you that hypocrisy is just as much a sin as any other. Pointing out the hypocrisy of others (and KP, I’m looking right straight at you, too, honey!) does not make you any less a hypocrite. Everyone has moments of “racism”. They’re not right, we shouldn’t be proud of them – but we are all human, and therefore we all hate each other, even if we only admit it in the deepest, darkest corner of our tiny black hearts.

      1. Um, no, we do not all have “moments of racism”. Stop trying to deflect anyway, he/she actually made some valid points because 90% of this controversy has remained about his homophobic statements and not his racist statements. The truth is if you think black people were happier during Jim Crowe then you are by all definitions at best ignorant, but more than likely a racist.

    2. Just wondering if anyone here has read the actual GQ article? Not bits and pieces from it that the media put together. The actual article. He did in fact say that all sin is equal, and that he is guilty of doing most of them. He never claims to be a saint nor does he in any way act like those disgusting assholes in that Westboro cult. Yes I am using the word cult for those fuckers. People look at Phil and judge him because he wears camouflage and has a beard. Ummm can we say as someone else earlier put it, the pot calling the kettle black. Speaking of black. I am also assuming that the idiots that are calling him racist against blacks has never watched the show. He has a mixed grandson who he has said was the greatest Christmas gift he has ever gotten. He himself said he was considered and called “white trash”. He just prays for those who judge because it is not up to him to judge. So let’s get off the hate Phil train until we all read the real article. Watch an episode and see if this man who you are putting in the same group of people as Westboro, really deserves that. If someone is gay or a lesbian than that is who you are. I am not here to judge. To be honest I don’t care. I don’t understand, and never have understood why it isn’t legal for you to get married. I think if we are to separate church and state then let’s do it and not pick and choose when it is convenient. Get married and have babies. How is it going to ruin the child? Have these people looked around lately? Being raised by a straight couple doesn’t produce angels and perfect citizens. We have a lot of screwed up people walking around that had a mom and a dad.

So do me a favor and read the actual article, maybe even watch a show and tell me if you see a Westboro man or just a man from the south who likes the woods.

      1. This is by far the most intelligent thing I’ve read about Phil Robertson. I’ve been screaming from the roof tops read the entire interview!!!!

  4. First off, let me just say that Phil never in the interview said he HATED gays. Not once. In fact, he said just the opposite. In the interview, he admits that he is just as much a sinner as anyone else, and while he may DISAGREE with homosexuality, he doesn’t hate the homosexual community.

“However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”

Saying he hates gays or is afraid of gays is nothing more than attacking the man and putting words in his mouth. He basically says the core of what I – a youth pastor – teach my students.

We are all sinners according to the book of Romans. And there are a lot of sins. But we do not have the right or the authority to judge others simply because they sin differently than we do.

And while I compare myself to neither, Pope Francis has said something similar. That we must stop dehumanizing homosexuals and treating them as less than human. This is not him saying homosexuality isn’t a sin.

    1. And comparing him to Westboro is extreme. You write about gays whining on social media giving you a bad name…Well, it’s the same with Westboro and Christians. They’re warping Christian Scripture and using it to spread a religion of hatred rather than love. I really don’t think Phil is in the same camp as they are, based on hearing his testimony and similar things.

      1. Westboro is a bunch of Democrat trial lawyers, mostly all one family, masquerading as a church. Their whole schtick is to provoke people into rash acts, then sue them for it. They are really irrelevant to this discussion.

    2. “We must stop dehumanizing homosexuals and treating them as less than human” ….. he literally said homophobia was a step down from bestiality.

  5. This is what Phil has said: “I myself am a product of the 60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. “However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”

So my question for you, is, where do you get that he “hates gays”?

      1. Look You may be gay for one he is not a redneck he is an American and I fought his right to use free speech. I also fought for your right to free speech. Yes I am a veteran of the U.S. Navy. My thoughts are don’t ask don’t tell. The gay community take things way to far and try and force there views on everyone else and that I do not stand for. So leave Mr. Robertson alone he is a great American who followed a dream and built an empire. Is that not the true American way? And yes I totally agree with him.

      2. James,

You mean the part where 99% plus of all human beings who have ever lived agree with Phil about anatomy and the normal uses for it? You know what? You’re gay, we get it. But you’re not some special snowflake any more than the kids that get a medal for just showing up. You’re not being hunted down like you like to pretend. Most people wouldn’t even know someone is gay except they go to great trouble to make sure everyone knows. Some people don’t like you? Well boo hoo, EVERYONE has some people that don’t like them. Is there violent crime against gays? Yep, and its disgusting – just as violent crime is against any human being, but gays only seem to talk about themselves. Gays on the one hand just want to be “left alone”, but on the other hand trumpet their gayness in everyone’s face. You seem pretty cool James, but most gay men I run into are, quite frankly, aholes. That is the main reason people around them don’t like them. “Homophobia” towards their gayness is simply the excuse these guys use to not change their behavior.

      3. So by him sayin “I just think a vagina has a little more to offer than a mans anus, come on dudes!” That means he hates gays? Where do y’all get this stuff. The fact of the matter is “gays” fight for tolerance of beliefs but when someone doesn’t agree with their train of thought they turn completely intolerant. This is a two way street. If it’s ok for you to call him an ignorant redneck from the south then why can’t he express his beliefs on homosexuality? He was ASKED that question, he didn’t go out and have a press conference and tell people it was wrong to be gay. So you sir need to take your own advice and stop whining and bitching about what he thinks. If you truly didn’t care what he thought you wouldn’t be calling him names like you are.

    1. I’m not sure of any of the very stero-typical comments made about the south, rednecks, Christians etc. I do not have a swastica, or any other hate related parophinilla. Though, in india the swastica stands for luck and good fortune. It was taken by a bad man and turned into something evil and hate mongering to serve his agenda. I think that can true about anything good, beautifull, love, Anything. It can be taken twisted and used in propaganda, made into whatever the spinster desires them to be. People follow, where they’re lead. YOU MUST BE THE CHANGE PEOPLE! Be it!
And for those of you posting about Phil’s comments, ” I my self am a product of the 60’s …. Blahptyblahp”…. That was his “RESPONSE TO A& E about the outrage over his magi zone interview.!;)

  6. You KNOW I love ya, but have to agree with Jamie here. At least a bit. Phil was quoted in the article: “We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus—whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later, you see what I’m saying?”

I defend no one (ain’t my job)…and granted, he said quite a few classless/tasteless things about it all, but if you’re gonna attribute that level of hate to someone you have to make sure it’s real. Otherwise, you’re doing what you’re upset with him for doing — generalizing.

    1. Actually he’s using the same line of thinking that they are. So yes, I do stand by that. He may not be screaming “god hates fags” but he’s insinuating gays are going to hell…
And I love you too. 🙂

      1. Actually, if he’s insinuating that all gays are going to hell because homosexualty is a sin, then he’s also insinuating that literally everybody, including himself is going to hell, because we have all sinned and he did acknowledge that. And that is why he also brings in Jesus as the one who can save us not just from hell, but from sin itself. That’s quite a bit different than Westboro’s message.

  7. I am also a Christian heterosexual and if you desire to sleep with a man that lies between you and God has nothing to do with me. I don’t hate gays and I am doing my best to make it to heaven on my own without judging someone else for their sins. First of in order to judge someone I’d have to be perfect and that I am not so no judgement on my part. Except God didn’t make you gay that is something you choose. Right or wrong that is your prerogative. May you have a wonderful day and life.

    1. Angie…so, since God has no influence in sexuality, at what point did you make the decision to reject homosexuality and be a heterosexual? Obviously, this was a conscious decision on your part.

      1. She didn’t say God has no influence in sexuality. She said God didn’t make him gay. Read and then comment..

    2. I love when straight folks tell us gays that we choose this, from their extensive experience not being gay. Do you have any ideah how foolish that sounds? Do you know what its like to be a raven, or bear? Do you know what its like to be asian, or african american? Do you know what its like to be mentally retarded? You get my point. You speak out if ignorance, and therefore label yourself a fool. Being gay is NOT a choice. Trust me, nobody would choose this, and no amount of praying will make it go away.

      1. That is exactly what I told someone in a comment below. There are scientific studies out that show that being gay is not a choice. However people fear what they do not know, and do not want to learn about what they fear. I have a little brother that is gay and he is picked on constantly. But he tells me everyday that it just is what it is. He didn’t have a choice in it. And I love him to death for his strength and courage.
And in comment to Cato Younger, you may have a gay friend, relative, acquaintance that says they were gay and have changed, it is highly unlikely that they have. They have most likely decided to hide it to stop the ridicule from others. They may even truly believe that they have, however, they will probably find later on that they are even lying to themselves.
Michael you sound like a wonderful person, keep your head up.

      2. So you believe god doesn’t want us to ever have a meaningful relationship. My choice according to you is a woman I am not attracted to or no relationship. That you act on the way you were born is a behavior, but being gay isn’t a choice. The choice is deciding to act upon it and I don’t think my god wants me to be alone and never have a meaningful relationship. Furthermore, in many ltr gay relationships sex is not the main focus just as in many heterosexual relatioships.

      3. You’re right, it requires a heart change first. I said the same thing when I was addicted to drugs. But when I truly opened my heart to Jesus and let him change me I was able to overcome the addictions.

    3. that is not true!!!! i am gay.. and i tired to sleep with many girls and nothen happened IFFFF choose to be gay WHY cant i get anywheres with a girl??? why did my heterosexual friend have sex with a guy and never got hard? if it was a choose he would have am i right??? its not a choose thank you… i wanna be able to date a woman and have a family ive tired many of times . it doesnt work

      1. People are driven to have a meaningful relationship and should be able to have one. You can have a relationship and a family. I have seen plenty of gay men who are able to adopt. I know of children that have been raised by a gay man and the children grew up to be hetro. Sexual orientation is a born in trait and I fully believe it is no more of a sin than eating pork is anymore, or having cheese on beef. There were many things listed in the Old Testament as a no then were flipped into a yes by the New Testament. In my opinion, It all comes down to is this action harming another person? Not at all.

  8. “Concerning the controversy of Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty and his views on homosexuality which got him kicked off the air. Although I believe he didn’t exercise very much wisdom in how he presented his points in the beginning of his statement and he came off with some of the things he said as very ignorant sounding which undoubtedly turned people off all together from hearing his statement of love and even his quote from the bible, as controversial as that is, and I can understand based on the first part of his statement, that it would be very insensitive and offensive, but I’m sorry, I still question a society that flaunts the ideas of sexualizing children, forks over millions of dollars to artists who still refer to women in all their songs as “bit*#es and hoes” as we promote misogynistic media. You can sing about raping women, beating prostitutes, and devaluing life. You can fat shame and bully people in magazines while you circle pictures of their cellulite after they gave birth to a baby and activate comments in the comment section from around the world via the internet for the rest of the world to point and laugh along with the article displaying the bullying, and we can actively kill our babies in our wombs who have heartbeats, fingers, eyes, and toes and call it a “women’s right” even if there is no health concern as the reason for it, but rather you can make this choice whenever you just feel like it, or even use it as your own source of “birth control” and be praised in the media for promoting it, yet when Phil Robertson quotes his bible and says some asenine things about a man’s anus, we kick him off the television set.
Wait, what is hate speech again? No seriously I need to make sure it’s still on the up and up that being referred to as a female dog in heat is ok and that human life is as disposable as yesterday’s garbage. Last time that was in season we called it The Nazi Regime.”

    1. Diana, you are my hero. Well said, and sooo true. As long as it’s a left agenda, its all good. No boundaries, no limits. When it’s a conservative, the media never lets up. I’ve never seen such double standard in my life. The exact reason i have no respect for them, including our president, who has divided this nation and promotes this kind of divisiveness every where he can.

      1. Oh yeah. Just the left. I mean its not like the right had a secret meeting the night Obama was inaugurated, plotinf how they would sabotage his entire presidency or anything. Oh wait; that actually DID happen.

Know what else happened? The Dixie Chicks’ career was torpedoed by an organized right wing “outrage machine.” In 2004 it was the “swift boaters” tryif to sully John Kerry’s military service.

But yeah; it’s the left that’s so divisive. You’re a heck of an impartial referee…

  9. I thought this was going to be an article of understanding the differences of others and accepting them. What it turned out to be was a semi-ignorant opinion hidden behind some passive aggressive humor. You seem to be ok trading one form of generalized stereotyping for another, which wouldn’t be so bad if you knew it was a problem that you were working on. I can’t imagine that you do since I see you defending it in the replies you made to others.

When I was young, I spent a little time growing up on an Amish farm with my grandparents (I was raised Mennonite). My grandfather used to say “it’s easy to forgive people you love when you can understand their shortcomings, but forgiveness isn’t suppose to be easy. Try forgiving someone you don’t love for something you don’t understand. Pray for those people. They need it more.”

I hope that helps you as much as it has helped me.

    1. And that is the exact opinion that causes issues like these to never progress. Let’s bury our heads in the sand and let everything work itself out.

  10. James,

Thank you for sharing this beautifully written article with the right amount of humor, facts, and thought-provoking viewpoints. I have never left a comment on a political or religious blog before, but I had to share that I 100% agree with your thoughts! I even shared this with my FB friends in hopes they will remember…. “Christianity is about love, peace, doing good in the world, hope, and faith.” It drives me crazy how these comments and opinions create a media circus and become an attack on Christianity and how seemingly normal people fuel the debate with extremely hurtful and judgemental statements. Don’t we all live in a glass houses? I also hope that by sharing your article with my FB friends we can all learn to stop whining when someone who has no impact on our lives shares a personal opinion that differs from ours. I agree we all need to grow up!

    Sincerely,

A straight girl from the South

      1. I for one, don’t bother to make anyone’s sexuality or “sins” my business at all. Unless, it effects me personally. I assume that by “your God” you are meaning the trinity, worshiped by Christian faiths? No offense intended just a question. Do you feel like it has become the norm to twist and pick and choose scriptures to justify our lifestyles? Gay, straight, perverted or whatever a person may be. I believe we are all given free will but just because God allows us to make a choice does it make it right? And the truth is there are different levels of sin, some greater than others.

        1. Abhorrence; disgust.
        2. A cause of abhorrence or disgust.
Please don’t think I am judging anyone. I know that scripture uses this word to describe homosexuality. I have no malice or ill intent. Just curious about how that makes a gay individual feel? At the end of it all I believe God will judge us individually not by just one sin or another. Or at least I hope so.

  11. “We never ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus-whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let god sort ’em out later.”

“However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”

Two very important quotes from Phil Robertson that you either haven’t seen or didn’t bother to read. I’m just so frustrated at the fact that you would compare this man to the disgusting, hateful members of the Westborow Baptist Church. His main message in every speech he has given is love God and love your neighbor. I wish people would focus on that.

    1. Just because two “good” quotes were made, that does not cancel out some of the more asinine. Since we’re going for context here, I’ve actually been forced to read the (ridiculous, might I add) article in GQ. (All I have is. . . Holy Jesus crackers. What the frog.) Some of the more “choice” quotes:

“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.” [I’d like to note that to me (and likely, most every reader. . . Everywhere), this is pretty much finger pointing. I’d also like to note that bestiality has been around a heck of a lot longer than homosexuality. As has promiscuity. But Phil makes it seems like “homosexual behavior” is to blame. Come on. Really? This is a Godly message?]

Also. . . Phil Doesn’t Ask Forgiveness For His “Sins”:
“During Phil’s darkest days, in the early 1970s, he had to flee the state of Arkansas after he badly beat up a bar owner and the guy’s wife. Kay Robertson persuaded the bar owner not to press charges in exchange for most of the Robertsons’ life savings. (“A hefty price,” he notes in his memoir.) I ask Phil if he ever repented for that, as he wants America to repent—if he ever tracked down the bar owner and his wife to apologize for the assault. He shakes his head.

“I didn’t dredge anything back up. I just put it behind me.””

And, Most Amusingly, Phil of Healthcare:
“Temporary is all you’re going to get with any kind of health care, except the health care I’m telling you about. That’s eternal health care, and it’s free…. I’ve opted to go with eternal health care instead of blowing money on these insurance schemes.”

There are a couple other ones. These are the ones that jump out.

All in all, Phil is unsurprising to me. He’s a Bible-thumping Redneck – and proud. He’s got a big mouth and he doesn’t always think before it opens. Surprise surprise. He may not be the image of Daystar, but he’s not a bad man.

The hubbub? All in all? Ridiculous. The people bitching about it, the people supporting it – the whole thing is ridiculous. And what I took away from James’ article is – let it go. Stop complaining about it. It’s not worth wasting the energy on. (Or reading, really. Jeepers.)

  12. I, like everyone else have my own tolerances and intolerances. This is my soapbox. I respect your right to choose whatever life style you desire. I have friends and family that are/were gay. Were as in a dead Grandfather as a result of his lifestyle in the late 60’s early 70’s. Anyway, I don’t buy your claim that your God “made you gay”. That seems to be the largest argument among the Gay/Lesbian communities. Here’s the thing. God gave you freedom of choice. For example, the forbidden fruit. They chose to eat the apple. God made you with a weakness. A choice of turning away from your sin or living in it. Just as he did child molesters, adulterers, liars, the list goes on for thousands more. The point is, you can’t claim you were made that way when you weren’t. You chose to be gay. It’s a desire nothing more. The same sinful desire as a man with a lustful heart. Each of us has a weakness God has given us and it is our job as Christians to smother that desire through Him. The Bible says an unrepentant man cannot enter the kingdom of Heaven. So if you live your life to your death as a practicing homosexual then you are not repentant. You will then be judged and left behind. That goes for anyone bold enough to try and interpret the word in such a way that it favors their own agenda and lifestyle. I’m not hating on you at all. I support your right to freedom. I wish you well and many blessings. I also hope you one day pick up a KJV and read it slowly and deliberately. It is a very easy read and not hard to understand if you are really searching the truth. Most are just scared of what they might find, which more times than not simply isn’t written there.

    1. If you are referring your dead grandfather in the 60s and 70s who passed away due to his “lifestyle” to HIV, HIV was not found in the USA until the 80s. Read a book dude.

      1. Trying reading comprehension, dude. He said his grandfather died because of his lifestyle in the 60s and 70s, not that he died of AIDS then.

According to “The emergence of HIV/AIDS in the Americas and beyond”, (http://www.pnas.org/content/104/47/18566.full.pdf) both HIV-1 and HIV-2 are believed to have originated in non-human primates in West-central Africa and were transferred to humans in the early 20th century. The earliest well documented case of HIV in a human dates back to 1959 in the Congo. The virus may have been present in the United States as early as 1966, but the vast majority of infections occurring outside sub-Saharan Africa (including the U.S.) can be traced back to a single unknown individual who became infected with HIV in Haiti and then brought the infection to the United States some time around 1969. By 1978, the prevalence of HIV-1 among gay male residents of New York and San Francisco was estimated at 5% although AIDS was first clinically observed in 1981 in the United States.

    2. Yes, we choose to be gay. It really makes life easy. It certainly wouldn’t be easier for me to get married, have kids, and a white picket fence. Yes I could choose not to have a meaningful relationship in my life, buy I ddon’t think that’s what my god wants. I was born gay like james. Didnt choose it and doesn’t mike life easy. However, I am glad I choose to be honest with w ho I am and how I feel. I know so many married men who because of your views get married then cheat with men. So sad. By the way, your comments comparing us to choosing like child molesters, etc. Is nuts. Many of us choose to act on how feel, but doesn’t mean we chos to be gay.

  13. James
A very thoughtful and interesting read you have here. Thank you for expressing your views and whether I agree with them or not, I fully support your ability to share them. Bravo for taking the time and eloquence to put them down. I wish more people would think before typing aimlessly. Have a happy holiday!

  14. Please read the entire article, where Phil proceeds to say that he would never disrespect someone because they are different than him. “We never ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the almighty’s job. We just love em, give me the good news about Jesus, whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. ” he also later said, “we were all created by the Almighty, and like him, I love all of humanity. ” the media didn’t seem to think that part was as important, for some strange reason..

    1. Paula, mixing judgementalism with “but who am I to judge?” is still judgementalism. Being compared to goat-humpers or whores or terrorists … (But he loves and respects everyone … ) is insulting. Plain and simple.

  15. I am not from the south but I do take offense for those that are with your spewing of a hateful message in your reference to the south. I think you erred there. I totally agree about Phil having the right to say what he feels. And I agree that he was never elected to speak for anyone. I personally do not believe in homosexuality but I would defend your right to live that lifestyle to the best of my ability. I know many, many people who are gay and for the most part I believe their intellect is of a higher level (at least the ones I know). I cannot judge you as you will have to answer for your own behavior not I. But please keep your message to one of love that you try to persuade others to pursue.

  16. You said, ” So his statement was factual, to a Christian reading a single verse in the Bible…being gay is a sin. What he failed to mention is that EVERYTHING you do is pretty much a sin. That is why you constantly ask for forgiveness as a Christian. One sin is just as bad as the other. There is no sin scale.” That’s true. But Christianity doesn’t teach that you should just keep sinning and then ask for forgiveness afterwards. Romans 6:1, 2 says, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” When Jesus spoke to the woman who had been caught in the act of adultery, He said to her, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” If a person repents of their sin and trusts Christ to forgive them, they won’t become sinless. But they will sin less than they did before. Christians need to be seeking to avoid sin and repenting and getting right with God when they do sin whether their sin is pride or saying unkind things to others or adultery or homosexuality (according to the Bible (Romans 1:18-28, Mark 10:5-9), homosexuality is a sin). The problem is that some people want to claim to be Christians but they aren’t willing to turn from sin. It doesn’t matter what that sin might be, if someone is holding on to sin instead of confessing and forsaking it whenever they fall back into it, they are either not a christian or they are backslidden. What is even worse is when people do things that the Bible clearly teaches are sinful but they say “nobody has the right to judge me.” If I go and commit murder, is it okay because “nobody has the right to judge me?” What about adultery? Is that okay because “nobody has the right to judge me?” When the Bible says not to judge, it doesn’t mean that if someone commits murder, you can’t say “that’s wrong. Murder is wrong, you murdered someone so you sinned.” Not judging means not judging the motives of a person’s heart. The Bible sets clear standards of right and wrong. Christians are not saved by keeping the law but by grace, but a person who is saved should be trying their best to live up to those standards because they love God and want to please Him. I don’t understand why some people want to deny everything that Christ taught by living a lifestyle (whether that lifestyle involves premarital sex or homosexuality or getting drunk all the time) that the Bible teaches is sinful and yet still try to claim that they are christians and there is nothing wrong with the way they are living.

  17. I think we have our own opinions about this issue. some of us r rightsome r wrong. THOSE WHO R WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE. I LOVE DUCK DYNASTY. IT TEACHES OUT DOORS AND TRYS TO GET THE KIDS OUT THE HOUSE TO DO SOME GOOD. THEY MAKE THEIR OWN WATERPARKS. THEY TEACH MORALITY. IF HE IS SPEAKING THE TRUTH WE CANNOT HOLD HIM FOR THAT. I HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS THAT ARE GAY. AND I LOVE THEM DEARLY, I KNOW PHIL DOES TOO, HE WOULD HAVE TO TO CALL HISSELF A CHRISTIAN. IF HE IS WRONG THEN I THINK GOD WILL DEAL WITHY HIM, WE C A LOT OF VULGARITY ON TV YET NOTHING IS SAID, BUT WHEN SOMEONE IS TRYING TO DO SOMETHING THAT THEY BELIEVE IN IS RIGHT THEY GET DISCIPLINED FOR IT. I BET U ONE THING IF A GAY PERSON OR ANY PERSON NEEDED SOMETHING AND THE PEOPLE COULD DO IT THEY WOULD . SO LETS LOOK AT ALL THE GOOD THAT PEOPLE DO. WE ALL R GONNA SIN. WE R NOT PERFECT. JUST REMEMBER IF WE R CHRISTIANS U AND I HAVE THE SAME GOD. SO LETS REMEMBER TO PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER AND KEEP LIFTING N STAEAD OF BRINGING DOWN

  18. Great write up bud. But I think the fact that issues like this are blown up on the news is what’s wrong with America! We have bigger problems than worrying what someone’s beliefs are. But as a heterosexual deep southerner I give you a lot of respect for not “whining” over someone’s views. Could’ve been a little nicer on the redneck stuff though haha. Also think you are spot on about people wanting to be politically correct! Complaining about someone not being politically correct is like a child whining over being called a name. And as a child your told to stop being a “whinny baby”. I recall, “sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me”, when I was young. And even as a religious person i do believe that God is loving and does not look down upon homosexuality period! i dont go out and support it but i dont go out and protest it niether. You are who you are no shame in that! I strongly believe that if you are a kind and loving person God will smile upon you and will accept you into the kingdom of heaven! Enough ranting though have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year!

    1. Chris,
You make a good point. Literally everything is the US now has to have some “larger meaning” and initiate a “national discussion”. Really? When did this start because it stinks. Sometimes things are just what they are – one event.

  19. Jesus saved a murder on the cross next to him as he asked for forgiveness. Therefore regardless what we do in life if we believe Christ is our savior and ask for forgiveness then he will grant it and save us. He will save anyone that is gay, murderer, rapist what have you as long as you have Christ in your heart and ask for forgiveness. ANYONE can change their views, their actions and repent. That is what is so great about Christianity because we believe we can all be saved. Now, that doesn’t mean you won’t be judged by God and what you may have to do in order to inherit the Kingdom once you passed from all the sins on earth. The only way to Hell is to simply rebuke God on earth, do hateful and horrific things while alive and denounce him while living. That is what truly makes us vulnerable to eternal death.

Now if Homosexual lifestyle is a sin, which is up to the Lord, he won’t bless a marriage – we can not change his will or his words to suit our choices and lifestyles. I mean we can, but that doesn’t mean when we die it’s going to be OK. We will have to face a punishment but if we believe in Christ and ask forgiveness we shall inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.

YES this man is spot on = Christians are NOT to judge and those that do are not true Christians or they don’t follow what they preach.

    1. Jason,

But there must be repentance. Always repentence. People who don’t think they are doing anything wrong will not see their sin or a need for a Savior.

  20. Mr. James,
I am a Catholic man born and raised in south Texas. Though homosexuality is against my beliefs for carious reasons, you and I can agree on many things. For one, I agree that everyone has the right to make the choice to love who they please. I believe that everyone has the right also to their freedom of speech. We can also agree that A&E as well as GLADD and GLBT communities have turned this into a huge argument over Phil’s 1st ammendmant right when it should never have been that. If you read what Phil had to say, he clearly states that though he believes it to be a sin he judges no one for that is the Almighty’s job and that he loves them no differently than any other person. So i do not think he will be putting up a God hates gays sign. Now what i would like to know is how is it that anyone and everyone that is for the gay community is allowed to say whatever they please whenever they please because it is their right but if i was to speak out against homosexuality because it conflicts with my beliefs i am lables as a hateful, uneducated and misinformed person, who hates gays because i am Christian. I do see that this is not your way of doing things, by you telling these people to toughen up and quit whining but do i not have every right to say that being homosexual is wromg as you do to say that it is completely ok and should not matter?

  21. *aplauds* completly and totally amazing! I’m so glad that there are people out there other than myself who view things like this in the same light! It is refreshing! I hope you have a very merry Christmas!

  22. Being a Christian who has a lot of gay friends I can tell you, it wouldn’t change his opinion. However, it’s not gays that a man like him or any (true and faithful) Christian hates, it’s the sin itself. I LOVE my friends to death, I just don’t agree with the things they do. I’m not going to try and change them, because what they love, they love and that’s their choice. And you’re right, a sin is a sin is a sin and I’m sure he knows that. They left a lot out of his interview where he stated that it was in fact the sin he hated, not the people and where he specifically said he has no right to judge because that is the Almighty’s job and no one else can do that. I think GQ did that on purpose. And hey, everyone knew what his answer was gonna be, he’s deep in the Bible Belt! Just the media spinning things way out of control 🙂

  23. Well said. Well, 99.99% of it…perhaps you should have used “given” instead of “A&E has giving Fox News and Rush Limbaugh a talking point…” but my punctuation is not above reproach so we’re square. I agree with your points: people today are indeed soft, there are much more important issues that could use this much focus, it is a reality show and he was being real (although the uproar is actually over an interview Phil gave to GQ magazine). That said, to make a generalization about certain people based on the geographic location they live…is bigotry on your own part. So, if you choose to call or imply that all of us deep southerners are rednecks, then I might choose to call you a faggot. Now, honestly, unlike most, I don’t think either one of us would probably be offended. You did throw a few stones in your article…so remember, we all live in glass houses. But you’re alright in my book, James.

    1. Well said! As a heterosexual female living in the deep south, James I take offense to your generalization of all southerners being “rednecks”. I guess you think we all walk around pregnant and barefooted and can’t articulate correctly. As I’m sure you take offense about what some people say about gay people. Tolerance people!! Phil expressed his views based on his biblical beliefs. We should all stand solid in what we believe!!

  24. So first off Phil never once stated that he hated gays nor did he say he was homophobic. You are putting words in his mouth. His statement was that all sins are equal and being gay is a sin. You are wrong for bashing “rednecks” and bashing southern people. His faith is that much more than most people here on GOD’S green earth. I have talked to my gay friends and they aren’t mad about the subject. Because they get it on a daily basis. You know they say two wrongs don’t make a right. So instead of putting Phil down why not try and do what God says. Pray for him. He loves everyone equally just like God has taught him. So take your negative views and shove them up your ass. I am sick of everyone making this out to be worse than it is. Its his opinions and simply that. He was asked about sin and that was one of the many subjects he talked about. So after seeing how many people have backed him and all the sponsors that are still there. Why not point your hatred and negativity somewhere else. You are why the LGBT community isn’t taken seriously. You want equality yet bash. everyone else. Why not support his freedom of speech and accept that EVERYONE has flaws!

    1. Well said Joe. I am a Christian and have failed at being Christ Like daily. One thing about Christianity is this…you are either on board with Christ or your not. In Revelation Jesus tells the church at Laodecia that since you are neither hot nor cold I spew you out of my mouth. The literal translation for the word spew is a violent vomit. The Bible also teaches that darkness cannot exist in the light and that Jesus is the light. See it’s one thing to sin. You notice you did it….you get called out by fellow believers…or something, maybe God, shows you that you have sin in your life in your prayer time. What you do at that point is crucial to your salvation. Someone that is saved and a son of God will be sorrowful for their sin and turn from it or repent as the bible says. Others will justify their actions with worldly desires and continue living in sin because some TV preacher has convinced them that God is love and that he will tolerate sin. God is love, but He hate/loathes sin and will not be in the presence of it. Jesus used many examples of this: sheep and goats, house on sand vs. house on rock, trees that bear good fruit vs. trees that bear bad fruit, the wide and narrow gate. The bible tells us that wide is the gate to destruction and many will find it and narrow is the path to righteousness and only few will find it. Bible also tells us that when asked “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy and cast out demons in your name?” Jesus turned to them and said away from me you evil doers and workers of iniquity, I NEVER knew you. Call me judgemental if you want, I’m just speaking what the bible says, which is truth. If you have a problem with it, it’s not me your having a problem with….it’s Christ. We have to evaluate our lives and take a spiritual inventory once in a while to keep us on the path of righteousness.

    2. . . . You have to STATE that you are using hate speech or being phobic in order to actually be considered to be using hate speech or being phobic now? Seriously?

  25. Just want To point out that half of phil statement was left un said..He said he does not hate anyone nor does he judge anyone that is our God Almighty job..so that mr gay guy is the diffrence..he does not encourage hate on any level..This backwood Louisiana redneckhaa more class and tact than alot of people.bur most of all he has guts to say what
offending people..and the best partall of this whole thing..is 83 million viewers agree with his redneck ass…so we all agree with what he said..and non of us promote hate..so who cares what ur one self thinks…get right..

    1. 83 Million Viewers Don’t “Agree” With Him… They Enjoy Watching Him On TV. Those Are VERY Different Things.

  26. I enjoyed reading this from a gay man’s perspective, and agree with most of it. The only thing I would say is try and watch the generalizations on southerners. It like me saying “oh he’s gay, you know he’s a flamer.” But with that being said, have a Merry Christmas and a blessed new year, and keep on blogging! 🙂

  27. Enjoyed reading the comments. Watched the show on A&E one time to see what was all about. I thought it was a combination of Deliverence and Knots Landing. I cannot beleive this guy is getting all this attention! Who cares what he thinks? If any of us made those kind of comments at work we would surely be fired.

  28. Jason ,
Just so u know the King James version is interpreted just like all the other versions. If you want to read THE WORD of God as it was originally written you need to go to a library ( a school with a seminary will have this) and get the Greek and Hebrew text which is the original word as it was written. Some words do not translate exactly from Greek or Hebrew into English as written. Just so you know!
As for all this other controversy, we can all just simply follow the golden rule!
Also as said in the Bible Love your neighbor as yourself.
Both sides are entitled to an opinion but we are not here to judge.

  29. “Anytime you have to defend something by saying it doesn’t represent hate, that should be a cue to stop flying it. (My swastika doesn’t represent hate either…)” Seriously? The swastika was a symbol of more than hate, it represented death. Defending Biblical beliefs about homosexuality being a sin is not stating that you hate homosexuals or would like them eradicated from the planet. Phil’s comments may be crude, but so are yours. Remember though, crude does not mean uneducated (as you so eloquently eluded to Phil being nothing more than being dumb redneck). I consider your post, with it’s generalizations about southerners to be on the same playing field with Phil and his unfiltered “vagina” and “anus” remarks. Maybe you’ll get your own “Support James” face book page and people will send thousands of tweets your way!

  30. I can tell you are not from the south . Well i am and i am a redneck i also have black and gay friends if you think that what you said was true you are as ignorant as he was for saying that . And yes i fly my rebel flag . So get your facts streat before you start casting stones.

    1. I’m from the south. Was raised by a single parent in a trailer. Typical “stereotypical” southern family.

  31. Well I really did not find it offensive. There are seven billion people on the planet. right?? Something like that. Not everyone is going to accept others lifestyle or color or religion. Hell I been hated every since I was seven I’m assuming for being poor and fat. I’m still a good person. And I believe to each their own. Unfortunately I do not see the hate or ignorance going away anytime soon. Not saying Phil is hatefull or ignorant. But people are what they are. Seven billion people and we are suppose to please all of them. Fuck that!!!! I ain’t even about to try it. Either you like it or you don’t. And if you don’t go on your merry way and shut the fuck up about it.

  32. I’m from the south and what you said is spot on about changing the channel and it not affecting anyone! Now, I can tell you I have gay friends, and even one or two in the family, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. It’s not my thing but that is ok because guess what my friends and family may not always like what I do. It is possible to support a person without bringing their lifestyle into your judgement zone. We should appreciate people for the individual person they are not what they are.
With that being said, I still love Phil and Duck Dynasty and I still love my gay friends and family!

  33. Actually, the swastika did NOT originally mean hate, or death. It was a Hindu religious symbol for good luck. Until Hitler stole and bastardized it, anyway. Shame that the man took a beautiful symbol amd corrupted it so that now it’s only equated with evil in most Western countries. (it’s still used as originally intended in India – an auspicious symbol, holy, even.)

As to the rest… I really don’t give a flying fuck. I was raised in the South, grew up Southern Baptist, am now still in the south but firmly non-religious. Phil – like many Christians, and like many of my family members – has opinions I disagree with, but he has a right to say them. You have opinions I disgree with, but you have a right to say them. Your main point is crystal clear, to me: while all of the offended certainly have the right to bitch and moan about who said what that hurt whose feelings, don’t we have FAR more important thngs to worry about than this or any other person’s opinions?

  34. I really enjoyed your article and agree with most of it. Many people have left out the fact that in the same GQ article he talks about how they “never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus–whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later…” He and his family don’t judge homosexuals, but in his own way Phil said that he doesn’t understand the lifestyle in that article. As a conservative Christian in today’s world, I feel like that there are times when I am walking a thin line. There are things I can say and things I can’t because I will be judged. I think both sides need to be more tolerant. I have friends that are homosexual. When they found out that I am a Christian and grew up in the South (Bible belt of the country) they started treating me differently. Due to many situations like that I am not comfortable at times being my true self at times. I think that’s sad, but I would rather avoid some type of confrontation, especially if my child is with me. While I may not agree with the lifestyle of homosexuals, I know that it’s not my place to judge anyone for anything. I am so over all the political correctness going on in the world today.

  35. James u are an idiot. Not b/c your gay but you are simple minded. You don’t like what Phil said then you turn around and stereotype him. You complain about his way of thinkin and you think within the same small lines. His comments were taken out of context. Your whole statement should be applied to yourself. Yes I am from the South and you are from idiotville.

    1. Thanks. In fact I was supporting his right to say it. Maybe you should read the blog, not the title. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  36. First, about God-our natural desires are not an excuse for sin. If I acted upon all my natural desires, my God would send me to hell and I would desire it.
Christ died so that I could over come sin, not live in sin. Let us also recognized that he spoke against infidelity and other sins of the bible.
Second – I’m all with you on A&E, except I say let them pull the show and let all those upset about the onslaught against freedom of speech as well as those supporting gays rights at all cost, boycott A&E and their sponsors and then we’ll see where their hearts truly are when the bottom dollar becomes the ruling policy.

  37. You said, “What he failed to mention is that EVERYTHING you do is pretty much a sin.” That’s not quite right. He did say that we’re all sinners and that all kinds of things will cause us to falls short. Including his past.

I appreciate your remarks and I can tell you are passionate about your stance. But I hope in the future you would read the whole article before making assumptions about someone you don’t know (and neither do I, for that matter).

Can I encourage you to read this post from a Christian perspective? Your choice, but I hope you will read it, as I think it well summarizes how most Christians I know (as a Southern, Christian, wife and mother) feel. http://perrynoble.com/blog/duck-dynasty-homosexuality-and-political-correctness
And if you don’t care to read it, here’s a quick quote, “Scripture was given to us as standards to live our lives by, not stones to throw at other people who we do not perceive to be as righteous as we are…. There is a double standard. No one in the media seems to lose their minds when a movie star, singer or corporation speaks out in favor of homosexuality; in fact, they are often lifted up as brave, courageous and heroes for taking such a stand. But let someone say that, as a follower of Christ, they do not support that homosexuality is an acceptable behavior and WWIII breaks out (point in case, Phil Robertson.) ”

And if you had read everything from Phil you would have seen this: “As far as Phil is concerned, he was literally born again. Old Phil—the guy with the booze and the pills—died a long time ago, and New Phil sees no need to apologize for him: “We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus—whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later, you see what I’m saying?”

I appreciate your blog post and your freedom to share your views. Thank you.

  38. I agree with most of what you have written and appreciate a different perspective on the media frenzy of the past couple days. You had me until this line, “To my gay friends that are offended…stop whining, toughen up, and work on changing minds…your status updates are making us all look bad. Worry more about what is happening in the Capital than in the Louisiana swampland.”.

Those words remind me of what a bully would say or what some on the far right say behind our backs when we are not within hearing distance. I understand the point you are trying to make, but for thousands upon thousands of LGBT individuals who have had to endure abuse and bullying; those choice words sting a bit. I think specifically of LGBT teens who are 30% more likely to commit suicide than other teens. The last thing they need to be told is suck it up buttercup.

I understand that LGBT adults need to take a step back at times and perhaps not be so quick to react, but at the same time many come from backgrounds where they were bullied, demeaned and/or maligned. Since emerging from this environment it does not empower them to be told to “toughen up”. There is enough well intentioned criticism coming from those who despise our community without leaders from within telling us to stop whining.

I understand what your intentions were and I agree there are times we as a collective community become dramatic or over sensitive when our energies could be put to better use. Advocating, educating and working for change in our communities and in our legal system is a better use of our time than arguing the Biblical meaning of scripture on Facebook. However we are all at different levels in our journey. Some are just coming out and after years of holding back are eager to express their newfound voice. Others are more mature in their outness and have learned to channel their energy in a more effective way. I think we need them all. I agree we need to focus more on Washington, but for the teen who is just coming out in the backwoods of Louisiana Washington politics seams less important than just surviving the antigay climate in rural America.

In calling for tolerance I think we in the community need to be more tolerant of one another, even if the actions of our LGBT brother and sister may not be exactly the way we would respond. The last thing we need is to make a less comfortable or confident LGBT member feel even worse about themselves by being criticized as not being tough enough by those who should be holding them up until they develop the self confidence they need to move onto the next level of activism. After all how can we expect the world to be more tolerant and accepting of all people when we in our own community do not tolerate those who act and react in differing ways from us? I think what we need more than anything in this world and within the LGBT community is less criticism and more empathy.

  39. Clearly you didn’t read the article at all. Phil never said he hated gays he simply said homosexuality is a sin and the listed other sins like adultery, lying, idoletry etc. In the interview he said that he lives all people and that he will leave the judging to God. I accept that he offended you by calling you a sinner but he called me a sinner in the same breath. Please read the FULL article before calling him a stupid redneck.

  40. Phil has never once said he hates gays and would never associate himself with the people of Westboro Baptist Church. Those are the type of people who give actual Christians a horrible name.

      1. James, you’re quite good at selectively responding with nothing but passive aggressiveness…

You should look in the mirror at how you treat people as well.

      2. Let’s let a few hundred random people start sending you hateful messages and posting hateful post and see how you reply. Merry Christmas!

  41. Of course, there is the possibility that this is a marketing gimmick setup by A&E and Phil to boost the show’s ratings. And christian and gay people jumped all over it. Lot’s of free advertising going all around the internet.

  42. Being neither Christian or gay, this issue doesn’t inflame me as it has many others, but you sure did touch a nerve with your excellent writing!

  43. Alright, here it is. I’ve kept my mouth shut on all the controversy this has caused this far, because personally, I don’t care. However. The guy was asked his opinion, and he gave it. He also said that regardless of his beliefs, he doesn’t judge people for their sins, he has enough of his own. He didn’t bash any gays, he is not some gay hating fool, he simply gave his opinion. So putting him on blast, talking about how he’s nothing more than a racist, Westboro loving hick who doesn’t understand the concept of a shower makes you seem a lot more ignorant and hateful than him.

  44. Well said overall. Having lived in the South for half of my life and the other half on the West coast, I have seen the stereotypical people as you pointed out. However, I also saw a good amount of progressive Southerners who have created a wonderful cultural balance of “good” down home Southern culture without the hate. I spent most of my time with them. It was an experience to see raccoon and squirrel on the grill, mudding, and many other stereotypical activities. They are good and loving people that have parties to include people of different ethnicities, lifestyles, and religions. So I would have liked to see you point out that he was on a minority group of classic Southerners and not really a full representative of the current times. Classically, he is all that you pointed out and anyone who expected something different was being ignorant. I do agree the guy should not have been fired because he is just being what he is and didn’t include threats and violence. It was rude on many levels but not hateful in his own way, and not unexpected.

I agree that God is love and God made all people as we are. I have seen a couple people post that people are not born gay. I believe people are born gay. I love science and research. Many years ago I found a research article that showed physiological responses of attraction. I was not surprised to see they concluded that people who are homosexual showed the level of physiological responses to the same sex as heterosexuals showed to the opposite sex. As long as one person’s behavior is not causing injury to another, then who are we to say what is right or wrong for them? Much of the Bible has been altered and parts tossed out or added in as the world leaders deemed acceptable in the name of translations. Sometimes it seems choppy and doesn’t flow which I imagine is because of the cut and paste that has been done. When we are right with God, in our heart, we are doing what we feel is the right path. Each relationship is independent and should only matter between that person and God. I always keep in mind that God’s ways are not man’s ways and thou shall not judge others. I would think one major thing people could do is step on God’s toes and try to take over His job by judging others. First off, people are not qualified to be God in any way. So each of us need to walk our own path and just love and accept all people on their own path.

Have a blessed Christmas and New Year.

    1. Heather, I respect your opinion but I have a couple things to point out – 1. I have seen studies on both sides of the “born gay” argument, and don’t really feel there have been any scientific conclusions either way. The study you referenced showed similar brain activity, but did not answer how the person’s brain got wired to be the way it is. A drug addict and gambling addict may show similar brain activity when confronted with their respective stimuli, but does that mean they were each born to be that way? Habitual behavior has been shown to have a physiological effect on the human brain. 2. Even IF someone was genetically inclined to be physically attracted to the same sex, does that make it OK for them to act on it? I may be physically attracted when a beautiful woman walks by – does that mean it is morally acceptable for me to cheat on my wife? Our culture has adopted a “romanitcized” view of love and sex that sees both as an inescapable force that is almost independent of our will. The truth is that true love is always a choice. We are not animals that have to obey our basic instincts. Certain temptations are always stronger in some than others, but that does not make them morally acceptable. 3. The Bible has been twisted and misused by many people for many purposes, but we have more archaeological evidence for the authenticity of the 66 books found in the mainstream protestant translations (the NIV, NASB, and KJV) than for any other literature from a similar time period. A lot of research and study has gone into making sure these are translated accurately from as close to the originals texts as we can get, and findings as recent as the 1950’s confirm their authenticity. If it seems choppy and hard to follow it is often because the translators seek to preserve the phrase to phrase accuracy rather than rearrange things. If you would like a version that is more easily readable, try the New Living Translation – the essential message is still the same.

      1. I didn’t make it past the first line. Let me answer that for you. Yes I was born gay. Why would anyone choose to be gay?

      2. 1. Yes people with addictions to have a physiological response. It has also been found they possess a gene that makes them born with a predisposition to become addicted. Which is why I can drink alcohol and not be addicted and my friend can not. So that further supports the study I read so many years ago about being born gay. If it becomes truly important to you to read those studies, I will take some time to try to pull them up. However, it was back in the early 90’s when I was researching several subjects while in graduate school for Psychology and specifically looking at biofeedback and human development.
        2. Again, who am I to say if people should or should not act on their feelings of attraction? AND: feelings of attraction to another person while you are married should not be compared to being gay. I know a few gay couples that have outlasted hetro couples by far.
        3. I studied religious topics and took Bible classes in a college from a professor that also teaches at the University in Southern Cali for future Pastors. I have read more than one version of the Bible. I was raised in a very traditional Christian family and grew up attending church 3 times a week and spending every holiday at the church. As the youngest of 6 children, I should have fallen in line easily, but I never did and found that I wanted to question everything. If you are strong in your belief then you should ask questions and openly accept questions. If you end the debate feeling the same, then perfect. If you feel differently afterward, then maybe you needed to learn something. God gave us brains for a reason, never stop thinking.

      3. James – for most gay people I have talked to it is about acceptance. They have feelings and desires they are ashamed of and never voice to anyone or deal with properly and the first place they find acceptance is in identifying themselves as gay. For others it is simply a logical conclusion based on their background and personal beliefs.

      4. Heather – I have a friend who is Irish and has a genetic predisposition to have a quick temper. I knew both her parents and can tell you it definitely runs in the family. Does that give her the right to flip out on whomever she wants? Does that make her anger and any resulting violence or cruelty morally acceptable? You are right in your second point – it is not up you or me to decide what is morally acceptable and what is not; it is up to us to discover what GOD says is morally acceptable. His word is the standard by which we are to judge morality, not our own feelings or opinions – that has been my point the entire time. As for your upbringing, I am glad you did not “fall in line.” I’ve seen way too many kids grow up in the church and learn to say and do the “right” things, but never have their heart changed by a real relationship with God. In my own life, it was not until I struggled through those questions and searched for answers that my faith really became my own. I pray that you will continue to seek and ask questions with an open heart and mind, because God is not through with you yet.

      5. You are correct in that your friend attacking other people would not be acceptable. She would need to control herself so she does not hurt other people. As I stated before, if someone is not harming another person, it is their decision on how to live their lives. In each example of behavior you have presented, you have included something that harms another person, ie having an affair and a friend who could physically or verbally attack another person. How does that relate to someone being gay? Two consenting adults living their own life does not impact on my life one way or the other. They are not hurting anyone. I do have a problem with people who hurt other people.

  45. I strangely enough agree with James Askers, I do Live in Key West, I am Not Gay… But I feel people are people, and each have their RIGHT to BE HAPPY !
Just has Robertson has his right to his opinions…. And A&E are all about the ratings of a show I do not care to watch, that why I am on the Radio.

    1. I don’t watch duck dynasty either, it shows on Wednesdays and I’m at church. I noticed you are a Reverend, what bible do you read?

  46. Everyone loves to take Matthew 7:1 out of context and claim that “first and foremost, Christians are not supposed to judge.” If you read the entire passage it is clear that we are called to make judgments about what is morally right and what is not. The warning at the beginning is that we first need to judge our own lives first and make sure we are holding ourselves to the same standard. This is completely consistent with the rest of Scripture where we are told over and over to use to wisdom and discernment to “judge” what pleases God and what does not. James makes a good point that we are all sinners and that homosexuality (or bestiality for that matter) is not some special class of sinfulness – it is listed along with greed and disobeying your parents. What he misrepresents, however, is the result. What makes the difference between heaven and hell is whether you have put your trust in Jesus Christ, or whether you are still trying to come up with your own way and make up your own God. Christians are free from sin – we don’t need to keep running back and asking for forgiveness over and over again because we have already been forgiven. That does not mean we can just go sin without consequences – back to my first point, we are supposed to judge what is right and what is wrong so that we can live the way God intended us to live. Homosexuality is a BEHAVIOR, not a state of being. Regardless of your past, your desires, or your genetics you are still responsible for the choices you make. That doesn’t make you any better or worse than me, Phil Robertson, or anyone else – we are all in need of a Savior. Jesus is the only one who can forgive your sin and show you who you truly are.

    1. I assure you homosexuality is no more a behavior than my breathing. It is who I am, it is how God made me. Merry Christmas.

      1. Im saying when we sin it is our own choice and that God made us free moral agents and will not force righteousness upon us. He loves us more than our finite minds can comprehend.

    2. James – at least we agree there is a God who made you. Maybe that is a start. 🙂 On what basis have you decided that God made you gay? Your own feelings/experiences? If God is really real, than He is independent of us and we must come to Him on His terms, not according to our own hearts which are so easily deceived and manipulated. I have seen “gay” people change when they surrender their lives to the truth of God’s word, and I have seen “straight” people struggle with sins they knew were wrong, but felt were as much a part of them as your feel your homosexuality is a part of you. It’s not easy, and for most it is something they will always struggle with – but thankfully our standing with God is not based on our obedience, lack of obedience or ability, but simply in our surrendering to Him. He will take care of the rest.

  47. The one true God didn’t make you gay. He wouldn’t create or make someone be something that is stated in His Word an abomination. Reading and hearing His Word makes us all see that we fall short but if or when we sin we have an Advocate with the Father, His name is Jesus. The blood He shed can break every chain, no matter what it is. God bless!

    1. As much as I want to delete this fallacy I will approve it. Everyone is clearly entitled to their opinion, even misguided opinions. Hopefully God will open your eyes. Merry Christmas.

      1. His entire word is not a fallacy. In fact the devil can’t stand the mentioning of Jesus our savior. If any of us feel a hate or resistance to God’s word we know it’s the devil trying to keep us from a relationship with Jesus.

  48. I completely disagree with James as a gay man myself, I do not find that Phil comment’s are truly being understood.
    On Slaves :

He described “never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers.” this man is clearly trying to disregard the awful treatment of slaves. Also he compares blacks to white trash “I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash”. HE stated that the slaves were happy.

    On gays :
“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus” who the hell is he to tell where someone should put their what into what? his comments are so crude and backwards. And being a “redneck” is a silly excuse. Im tired of hearing excuses “I’m from the south” who cares?? ITs not an excuse. So yeah I see why GAY people and BLACK people are upset with this man. He made some very nasty remarks and now were gonna go ahead and stand up for him? Sick of it. Christians using the bible to bash others sick of it. I don’t go into straight peoples homes and tell them to try a man’s anus because its better so all of you quit telling GAY people that they are over reacting. People need to learn to speak about things that pertains to them, not others. Jesus taught that himself. He taught acceptance and love. A lesson Mr. Phil needs to learn. A simple “no comment” would have sufficed on the question. Now he must face all the backlash.

Also, I think that if we say that this man’s opinions and mouth are OK. Then we are loosing our battle for equality as humans. HE is no idiot, he is in the limelight and should know to watch what he says (right or wrong). So yes its offensive, and yes he deserves what he got and he should apologize because if you have nothing nice to say, you shouldn’t say anything at all.

    1. In regard to Phil’s comments on black people – he was not talking about “slaves” but about his personal experiences with people he knew growing up (he’s not THAT old…). They were poor farmers just like he was. He didn’t say they were happy before Jim Crow laws were repealed, either – he said they were happy before welfare and the entitlement mentality that many people have today came along.

      1. Brian is right. His statement was not in regards to slaves but sharecroppers like himself and my grandmother.

      2. “welfare and the entitlement mentality that many people have today”.

There’s so much in this, but I don’t believe you’ll ever see it.

  49. James, I pretty much argue the exact same point that according to the Bible, if we are using that as a benchmark, we are all sinners. I find your view very much aligns with mine, however I am not gay, so my opinion, according to those I discuss it with, is not as credible. Simply put we need more people like you, gay or not who cares it’s a free country, we just need more people like you.

  50. Mr.James, I’m 50/50….Some stuff You say I totally agree with and some I don’t! But I do think everyone has a right to speak his/her mind and each has a right to agree or not…as for me….I agree that homosexaulity is a sin as is many other things that will destroy the Soul….and I do believe we have a president that is destroying our country….we need to first worry about our own eternity, pull the 2×4 out of your eye before helping a friend getting the speck of dust out of his…..but we should all stand together against our leaders leading us down the road we are on…….I would proud to stand beside You at a rally on political reform !!!!!

  51. All this controversy over what Phil said is just insane. He never said he hated Gays, he said it was a sin. If they didn’t want his HONEST answer, they should have never asked him. If somebody asked me a question, I am going to tell them how I feel. If you don’t like my answer, then you shouldn’t have asked me. A Sin is a SIn, whether is stealing, lying, adultery, whatever its a SIN. I don’t care about anyone’s sexuality, that’s not for me to judge. I know a lot of gay people, and I don’t love them any differently, that is their choice. We need to get down to what is more important, like this COUNTRY we live in. Here it is all our troops overseas are fighting for this great COUNTRY, some getting injured or killed, but they are very seldom recognized. We all have different beliefs and are entitled to our opinions. With that being said, don’t ask someone a question if you don’t want to hear what they have to say. The TRUTH hurts and a lot of people don’t want to hear it.

  52. I am a proud southern woman.. My family lives in the swamps of Louisiana.. and it’s sad to say that the stereotypes you have listed are accurate overall. Louisiana is definitely not going to be the next state to legalize gay marriage but I feel like I should say some things.. 1. We have the Decadence festival in New Orleans which is a gay pride parade, and everyone has learned that if you do not support gay rights to stay away during that week. 2. A good portion of us a religious, but for the most part we leave others beliefs alone. Phil saying he thinks it’s a sin is not a surprise. He isn’t wrong for his beliefs, the bible says the same thing. His mistake was sharing it with the world. But I don’t think anyone is wrong for how they feel. So what if he doesn’t condone homosexuality.. like you said, why does it matter what he thinks of your life. Live your life and live it proud! It’s the only one you’re getting. Where was I? Oh yeah, number 3. The rednecks do fly their flags, but to the ones flying it it has taken on an entirely new meaning. I haven’t really heard anyone being too offended by what he said, I mean, most of us down here have learned to let it go. The south, or at least the parts and people I associate with have a live and let live kind of attitude. Wow, I rambled a bit there… Just to recap, I agree with you on this whole subject, I am a supporter of gay rights, and I just don’t think Phil’s opinion matters.

  53. Hilarious, you take the exact same stance as rush limbaugh then rip on him saying he has a freedom of speech talking point. It really seems like you listened to his show then wrote this. Which you most likely did then claimed it was your original thought..funny.

    1. Thanks. But this blog was posted yesterday morning. Long before Rush was awaken from his drug induced coma.

  54. You should care a little more about Phil Robertson and people like him. Their views on gay marraige determine who they vote for and who gets elected, which indirectly affects your life as a gay man.

  55. James,

What is so wrong with being a redneck?

I’m a redneck, a Southern Man, a Country Boy. Do you hate me? Do you know me?

  56. Phil never said he hates gays. He said it is not his place to judge and he even said Love thy neighbor. You are a jackass and are putting words in his mouth.

  57. I will say you have definitely covered every aspect of this ridiculous, taken to extreme gibberish. I have a daughter whom is gay, I love her un-conditionally without merit. Aww yes she is also a Christian, saved by the grace of God!!! I appreciate that you unlike so many others have said what it is I have been saying forever, we have so much more important problems in this “wicked” world to worry about than who gets offended by who. Thank you for putting into words what I couldn’t… .

  58. We’ll first off you have the wrong words. Phil never said he “hated” fags, he said that he dosent understand why a man would want an anus over a vagina, second he also says that he isn’t one to judge and that he loves everybody because that’s what the bible says, “love Jesus love others.”
I am from South Carolina and I support Phil Robertson

  59. In reference to your quote “I actually think God would not have made me gay just to send me to hell. God didn’t make you gay. What sense does that make? God doesn’t make some gay and some not gay. That’s stupid. Perhaps something happened in ur childhood to cause you to go that route that you were too young to remember. God didn’t do it though.

  60. James,
Well written article. I don’t agree with 95% of it. James should read the GQ interview. All you are quoting is other media. Pat says he is not to judge, it isn’t his place. It was just his opinion. LGBT is around 3.5% of the US population. 79.5% of US population claim to be Christians. Their are more than 2 billion Christians in the world of 6.9 billion. About 32%. I think (my opinion) that their ratings would sore if they went back on the air.
I don’t care what anyone does, but don’t try to push your views on my. Opinions are just that, opinions. We all have them.

  61. I stopped reading your article about two paragraphs down. I have no beef with anyone gay/straight/lesbian/trans-gendered/black/red/yellow/purple/or green but despise someone who demands that I refrain from voicing my free speach while screaming bloody murder their right to it is so much more important! Fine, you take it raw willingly. No problem, however in your vile one sided opinion, there are those that do NOT like it raw and willingly. Why does this make your opinion more important than the other?

It seems you want your free speach and right to force business to conform to your opinions but refuse to allow a business you put not one dime into, to have their opinions. This makes you one sided, bigoted, racist, and simply vile.

You want equal rights, this means your rights are equal to EVERY and I MEAN EVERY other citizen in the U,S. Your opinion is no more valid than the next persons. Until you see this, we’ll fly our “heritage not hate” flags, (I seem to see a lot of rainbow flags around), and voice our opinions taught us from God’s word.

You would do well to read it yourself.

    1. Ha. You didn’t even read the blog. I clearly said I support his right to say what he wants and that gays need to stop whining. So do you.

    2. You’re proving to the rest of us how dumb you are. He’s got a right to be on a show. Advertisers spend money to advertise products on their show. I won’t buy the products that do. If they don’t want to lose my dollars then it’s up to them. No one has had their rights infringed. You fake Christians are the ones that are going to hell. You just don’t know it yet.

  62. Wow. Well said (written). While we are two men who most likely live lives that are polar opposite, I completely agree and appreciate your views and perception regarding the problems with this country. Political correctness and hyper-sensitivity, “grow up” right? Your writings here were worth my time and I thank you that. Spot on!

  63. Excuse me, James…..??? I just want you to know that it’s a DAMN shame your gay, cuz if you weren’t I promise you after that “perspective” I may have had to propose to you!!!!! Lmao!!!! VERY WELL SAID!!!!! Thank you for “MULTIPLE” 😉 laughs!!!!!

    Pamela

  64. Interesting read…I am a deep south “redneck” from Mississippi so you probably don’t have to analyze my facebook profile to hard to see what I believe or where I stand politically…that being said, I was a Phil Robertson fan long before A&E ever conceived the idea of taking some backwoods Louisiana boys and putting them on cable TV…back when Phil was shouting “cut ’em” and biting the heads of wounded ducks to save shotgun shells on a hunt…that was Duckmen in the 90s FYI….anyway Phil is obviously deeply rooted in his beliefs and convictions, he calls it like he sees it and it ain’t all pearly gates and streets of gold for the world…bad thing as a heterosexual married male that never messed around with a goat, he dropped me in mix by adding drunkards to the list of damnable sins…yeah it appears some of us good ole boys have some sinning problems too and it ain’t anuses that will put us in hell…it is the fact we all tend to apply a human scale to a godly test…the test of “is my sin really that bad?”….truth is, gayness isn’t even on my sin radar…I’m not gay so if all gays suddenly begin to melt the day Jesus returns, that won’t be what takes me down….it will be my sins…but again this is just a drunken redneck ramble on a Saturday night…so God bless…DD was decent tv for families with small children; muck better that Jersey Shore or Honey Boo Boo anyway…and I do agree with Phil on one point: the vagina is very desirable and enjoyable…I highly recommend it…but hey that’s just a southern redneck’s opinion. Merry Christmas

  65. Who’s prejudice here? Gays, rednecks, who’s next James? Whites, Christians, your gay friends that are looking for attention by posting ‘look at my sorry gay ass pics’

  66. First off, I definitely want to say that when I clicked this link, it was merely out of curiosity for what was pissing my hyper-religious family off THIS time. I honestly have no idea what “Duck Dynasty” is or who this person is, but I do know that your article was enough to make me use my insomnia as a way to educate myself a bit.
And…I really only have a few constructive criticisms to say, as a fellow writer–one, your extensive use of ellipses was slightly jarring, but I was able to get what you were going for. And two, I loved reading your perspective. It was eye-opening. As a “straight” (because who’s to say what the future will bring in terms of whom I’m attracted to) female from a D.C. — with immigrants on one side and Louisiana-breed Southerners on the other, I have a slightly, ehh, different view. And, because everyone else is spitting out their two cents, I figure I’ll share mine.
In Louisiana, there are entire towns that are just African Americans who…live off the welfare their children bring in. I feel wrong saying it, because I was raised to be very politically correct and to care about how my words make others feel, but this is a fact. So, for the people claiming what’s-his-face is racist, just remember that all he’s ever known are “blacks” who don’t particularly fight for their own rights.
As for his comments about homosexuality, frankly, I didn’t personally find them offensive–but that’s more because I feel like if you’re falling in love with someone based on their genitalia, there is something ridiculously wrong with you. I can understand why someone would, but go be honest–I have wondered similar things; I just never voice those things (eg: “why would someone want to have anal sex? That seems ridiculously painful for the poor guy/girl.” “Why do men find oral sex so appealing? Seems pretty gross to me…” etc.).
Anyhow, I just wanted to say that I am a full supporter of gay rights–and for those of the more…”born-again” persuasion saying that people would CHOOSE to be gay–do you choose to breathe? Do you choose to be hungry and eat? Do you choose, consciously, who you are attracted to? No. Simply put, there is a proven genetic link–Hell, they’ve found the “gay gene” for men, and it’s only a matter of time before science proves that women have a “gay gene” as well. (Though personally, I think all women are a little bit lesbian, seeing as how there’s no other reason for us to look at another chick and say, “damn, I wish I had her boobs.”)

Anyway, I apologize for my extremely tl;dr post, as well as any typos (not only is it 1:15 EST, but I am on my cell), and wish you a very merry Christmas, good sir. Here’s hoping gay marriage becomes legalized in more states, as soon as possible (what was it, sixteen and counting, now?)! ♥

    1. “I was raised to be very politically correct and to care about how my words make others feel, but this is a fact.”

Clearly you were not. Whites get FAR more in welfare than Black folks ever will. If in 2013 you don’t know that yet, there’s nothing I can say to teach you otherwise, but the folks REALLY living off of government welfare? Poor ass trailer park white folks like you.

    2. Clearly you fail to recognize the difference between the male and female anatomy. Males have a prostate, females do not. That little butterfly shaped gland is located just up inside of the male anus. This gland makes it possible for males to piss in morse code, and to hold urine. It is also partly responsible for the convulsions during ejaculation. It is extremely sensitive, and when stimulated externally (via something inserted into the anus) it is extremely pleasurable, must like the female clitoris. That is what makes anal sex pleasurable for all men, even straight men. Many straight men will never admit it, but they enjoy having something inserted into their anus to stimulate and pleasure them. Many of my straight male friends have admitted this to me, and that they have practiced this with their girlfriends. The reason they do not have sex with men, is quite simple though, they were not born homosexual and are not sexually attracted to males.

Which brings me to my next point, love has nothing to do with genitalia. However love does involve romantic interests / feelings.. etc, and those include sexual attraction. I can love a woman more than anything, but the fact that I am not sexually attracted to women precludes anything more than platonic love from taking place there. Sex is but one factor involved yes, but it is a basic , and very important one. People would be lying to you if they said that sexual attraction is not the primary reason for beginning the pursuit of another person for romantic love interests.

Homosexuality has been proven to occur throughout most of the animal kingdom and in nature itself, to varying degrees. It is a naturally occurring phenomena, and most are born that way. Human sexuality as Kinsey pointed out, is not matter of black and white, it is a matter of many shades of grey. Think of a scale of 0 to 10. 0 being completely heterosexual, and 10 being completely homosexual. Most fall somewhere between 0-2 or 3, or 8-10. SOME fall in the 4,5,6,7 range. Those individuals have the ability to have sexual attraction to both sexes in varying degrees, thus being bisexual.

You’re on the right track, but there is always more to learn. Just thought I would try to explain more to you so you know. Best – KJ

  67. Well said! It’s amazing to me how hypocritical our world is. Everyone wants to immediately criticize anyone with an opinion that differs front their own. We have lost the art of conversation as that means having a discussion not just all agreeing!

  68. Hehehe. Christians are so funny!!

Do you know what the motto of Satanism is?

“Do what thou wilt. Love is the law.” (- Aleister Crowley, thought to be the “most evil” man of his generation).

We wage war and cast condemnations in the name of jesus christ. When was the last war fought with the slogan “Hail Satan”?

We need to wake the eff up. We aren’t “straight, gay, black, white, men, women.”

We’re humans. At least some of us.

  69. You see this what the bible says Surely you know that the wicked will not possess God’s Kingdom. Do not fool yourselves; people who are immoral or who worship idols or are adulterers or homosexual perverts or who steal or are greedy or are drunkards or who slander others or are thieves—none of these will possess God’s Kingdom. (1 Corinthians 6:9, 10 GNT)
It does not mean I will not love you or pray for you or I will not treat you different. We are all sinners the difference is I pray for my sins and I strive to not disappoint God.

  70. Surely you know that the wicked will not possess God’s Kingdom. Do not fool yourselves; people who are immoral or who worship idols or are adulterers or homosexual perverts or who steal or are greedy or are drunkards or who slander others or are thieves—none of these will possess God’s Kingdom. (1 Corinthians 6:9, 10 GNT)
I will pray for all sinners, especially mine. Gods plan is the best. Our country was founded on Chritian beliefs and religion. Pick up a history book and read about it. You can live your life how you see fit but you will answer to God for all your sins as will I. Why not try I life pleasing to God.

  71. How about a grammar and spell check before you post; I think Uncle Si could have done better.
But, back to the subject at hand…who cares?! He has the right to his opinion and yes, he’s a redneck. What is the American public expecting from him? He’s “old school”, and what about free speech? He has a right to speak his mind. I’m not saying I agree with it.
Reality T.V. is getting way out of hand. We are such a sad country. We need to boycott the media.

  72. I just wanted to take the time and say thank you for putting this out there. You have addressed the issues brilliantly and I’m glad someone with enough backbone stood up to say something about all of the crap floating around. I hope you continue to do so….but from what I read…I think you will

  73. Very well written! I loved the part about the Chinese money! Some of these responses are hilarious! What If some of these Merica people would focus on that? But they would have to do research which means they would miss the next episode of DD. You could do stand up with some of this stuff! Merry Christmas.

  74. As a Christian, teacher, daughter of a career serviceman, niece & dear friend to a couple of great lesbians and finally fan of DD! My take on this entire media fiasco is pretty much the same as yours – we all are blessed to live in a country where we are not shot on sight for what we say or believe! I think it is awfully funny that the same people who wave flags, post pictures of soldiers at war saying what a great job they are doing for other countries rights, but won’t allow Americans those same rights. From a morality standpoint I teach my daughters the same as they teach and have spoken openly on the show about with the Robertson teens – and I have gone over this with my oldest more in the know – God sent his son to die for all not a select few – all ANYONE has to do is ask his forgiveness and seek him daily

  75. When did Phil say that he hated gays? I guess I missed that part. Just because you disagree with a person’s choices/lifestyles DOES NOT mean you hate them.

    1. David, If you’ve never had to fight for your rights, then you wouldn’t understand what it’s like. I’m sure responding to someone like you is pointless. The fact that you use words such as “fag” and “cry” shows your small mindedness. You sir, are sad. I actually would like to meet your gay brother and inform him why this is more important than some of you supporters think. It’s not just about free speech, its about children growing up and committing suicide because they live in a world full of hate, or worse school shootings. It’s about innocent people in New York being murdered just because their sexual orientation is different than others. It’s about tolerance. Not just gay people, all minorities.

      1. See the only reason why gay people and yes i will say fags have to fight is because you won’t shut up about it. you have gay parades all over the place and your own days of pride and what not… you don’t see straight people doing that and you know why? because we just don’t care and don’t feel a need to tell everyone about it. so you see its as simple as shut up and again stop crying because no one cares what you do in your own home. As far as people killing them self over it well they are people that just don’t have enough back bone to fight through the bad times to look for the good times. So yes I agree with what Phill has to say and you should respect his opinion just as much as he should respect you gay people.

  76. lol what is really funny is that my brother is gay but he don’t cry and push it in everyone’s face like you because he is a normal human. we all have the right to give our opinion and that is all that Phill is doing. so stop acting like its the end of the world and move on.

    1. Obviously you are unfamiliar with any kind of oppression. Trust me, if you are white, and all the sudden whites were persecuted and you grew up with that, with laws about where you can do, who you can be with, who you can mate, who you can love, what you can and cant do in your own home… where you can and can not go…etc.. and you were fighting for your own rights, you too would have pride in who you are and where you come from and your heritage. You probably already do have pride in your heritage and where you come from just as you are. So explain exactly what is wrong with having “cultural celebrations” of any kind? NOTHING! By saying this you are saying there should be no cultural celebrations at all. No Jazz festivals, no Bluegrass Festivals…. no Native American festivals NOR… religious festivals!..etc. Does not make much sense. If people want to celebrate their heritage, culture, religion, so what? Who cares? That does’nt make it OK for someone to go out and be a bigot in public though. But whatever, talking to people like you clearly is worthless and a waste of time as all you will do is be a big “internet strong man” and call people names and make bigoted remarks.

  77. God does not hate people that are gay. He does not hate people that commit adultery. He loves everyone. He hates sin. He cannot be associated with sin.

  78. Jay
I don’t think you read the whole piece… Phil never stated he hated gays… A question was posed and he answered it truthfully from his point of view… But he said he loves everyone whether you are gay or not because he doesn’t have the right to judge only God has that right… and he stated that he was a sinner but is trying to follow the Bible now… But you just judged everyone from Louisiana which was offensive to me as a Southern Louisiana woman… You might want to take your own advise about judging everyone off of ones opinion… And no I’m not gay or should I say a lesbian but I have many friends that are and I love them all the same…

  79. Thanks for this. Sometimes we get so angry when they attack people we love and care for that we forget to see things clearly. We need more people like you in the world, People will hate but be sure that God will always love. Thanks again 🙂

  80. While our god is a forgiving god you can’t ask for forgiveness of a sin and walk in it every day thinking you are forgiven. If any man or women is to be truly fogiven they become a new creature all things of the past are gone they no longer walk in that sin. Further more we are not promised today.

  81. Brilliantly stated… Love it soooo much! You are correct. We are all getting too butt-hurt (as my husband would day) that we try to protect everyone’s feelings and thoughts. I say pull down your sally skirt and move on. You are right. They made Phil a victim versus just a plain ignorant idiot. I am tired of the PC ruled entitled mentality that has become the norm. is

I applaud you taking what should be the obvious and breaking it down Sesame Street style so it clicks into the brain-washed drones we (as a society) have become.

Oh and you are gay? Ha ha… Sorry I couldnt help it. That made me laugh. Having several friends and family who are gay it cracks me up that their sexual orientation is such a wonder.

I look forward to following your blog. Happy to encounter another person from South Carolina who has a witty yet intellectual tongue…..

    Merry Christmas!

      1. Hi James. I live in Charleston. I am originally from Wisconsin. You have a very refreshing mind. I truly believe I could get lost in conversation with you for hours. Keep up the work with setting the minds free! =)

  82. Like the post the only thing I disagree with is he never said he hated anyone. After all he said he followed that with he loved everyone no matter if you were gay or not. Which as Christians that is what we are taught to love everyone as Christ loves us

  83. You’re actually incorrect that according to Christians and the bible all sins are equal. In Catholicism at least, there are Venial and mortal sins. Venial sins would include lying about your grades, skipping church on a holy day of obligation, and not apologizing to someone. Mortal sins would include murder, adultery, and the like. I’m not gay but agree with your point of view. Nice article.

  84. James, well done. I think your position is well-articluated. And for the most part, I agree with you. The only place where we kinda disagree is where you said/eluded to the fact that Phil might hate gays. I really don’t think that’s true. I don’t even watch the show (I absolutely hate reality television, in whatever form.) but from the few snippets I’ve seen, I’m as certain as I can be that Phil would be happy to talk to you, to break bread with you, and maybe even to worship with you, if you were willing. I can’t see him proselytizing, or giving you the cold shoulder.

Like Phil, I have my own opinions about homosexuality. And granted, my views have shifted somewhat over the years as I have matured and taken into my heart a few dear, dear friends who make my life better by being in it, and happen to be gay. It looked, admittedly, (and somewhat ashamedly, as I’m sorry I was so quick to judge in the first place) different once I had those relationships. I do not think that homosexuality is what God had in mind for us. But I don’t know that. I mean, I sincerely doubt that homosexuality plays a part in the way He had mapped it all out. But I do believe that people can be born gay. Why would anyone choose that row to hoe? It’s tough being gay, no matter how you look at it. And anyway, the only unforgivable sin, Praise His Name, is the sin of continued unbelief. (When you think about it, how could one be saved and sanctified if you didn’t accept that Christ is the Saviour?) I sin and disappoint God every. single. day, and generally multiple times throughout. Who am I to stand in judgement? Who am I to say that someone else’s sin is bigger than mine? Christ meets us where we are, not when we’re where He wants us. That’s His job – getting us there. His Grace, and only His Grace, is what keeps me from eternal damnation! I mean, really, my kids are only 12 and 13, and I’ve ALREADY screwed up so many times, that it’s only His Grace that will make their lives into what He had planned. It certainly won’t be because of my expert parenting skills. So I’ve come to the (very heard earned, with many, many diabolical decisions) that I will love. I will be a friend. I will approach everyone with respect and with gentleness, bearing in mind that we are all made in His image. I don’t think Phil would disagree.

  85. James, I agree with what you said 100%!!! Although I’m angry at this so called man for his intolerance and would like to shake him, of course I’m not surprised at all!!!! Yet, I am with you, we are giving him and all of the other racist and haters too much attention. In addition, we are in America and we all have a right to free speech!!
A point that I’ve not heard mentioned is the fact that every time the bible is quoted it is out of context. People use the bible as they see fit and for the belief system they want it to fit into. We no longer live under Old Testament rules….Jesus died on the cross for our sins so that we could have justification by faith. Our sins are forgiven by his blood shed. Loving another person of the same sex cannot be sinful because God says to love as he so loved the church and I do not believe that God would have created human beings in his image to be gay only to let them burn in hell.
Thanks again for your profound bravery in posting your thoughts!!!

  86. You gay people”. So how many times have you had sex with your cousin? Is that you saying that all straight people sleep with there cousin? or are you trying to say im confederate because im not even from the usa…. you obviously have no point because you know I am right that gay people need to stop telling everyone that they are gay. Its funny to read though this and see you made half ass remarks to try and make your self feel better not only on my posts but on a few others also .

    1. I’m trying to Christmas shop for my friends and family. I’m sorry Fox News is off air or whatever but could you please go somewhere?

      1. hahaha!!!! what? i thought you where going to make another stupid remark to show off your lack of intelligence. Don’t tell me to go somewhere when im making good points against a blog you started fag

  87. You’re delusional if you think the sponsors are backing off – it’s called Duck “Dynasty” for a reason – they generated $15MM in sales for Under Armour alone. Those guys – like most out there – are laughing their asses off as this is creating a bigger market for these guys – albeit in a different network when they take their ball and play somewhere else. Ducks win.

  88. I’d have been content to let get away with the GQ interview until the video of his hateful sermon surfaced. He doesn’t need the fame of his show. Let him be fired, and let him fade into obscurity. I live in Kentucky and am surrounded by bigotry. While I agree political correctness may be overdone these days, when you can count the noon bigots you know on one hand you snap at it a bit more heatedly than is acceptable.

  89. Mr Akers, your comments are a breath of fresh air in a very stale world. I never watched that show, never plan on it. As some people have said it teaches kids to be outdoors and enjoy the world, isn’t that a parents job?
I’m FAR from defending what was said by Phil but as an old man from the deep south, etc etc, A&E and the rest of the world shouldn’t be surprised at all. My Dad, God rest his soul, grew up in Boston in the 20s and 30s, accepted everyone for who they were and used “Archie Bunker” words to describe people, not in a hurtful way but that’s just who they were! Side note, imagine how scared I was telling my Archie Bunker-ish father that I was in love with a man…..my partner was accepted as another son to my Dad.
The world is going to Hell quickly with the political correctness, it has to end sometime soon. Call a spade a spade and move on. Doesn’t matter if you’re on the left, right, in the middle, gay, straight, black, white or plaid. Accept who you are and move on. Love who you want, be nice to one another, play fair and share your toys. God loves us all.
I hope you and those around you have a wonderfully Merry Christmas and get all the shiny, sparkly things that we gay men like !! (yup, stereotype inserted)

  90. I doubt anyone like Phil Robertson would align themselves with a bunch of hate mongers and assholes like WBC who are far from being Christians or a church if you ask me.
And, while I agree with the majority of the points in this blog post…it is GLARINGLY obvious that the writer has his own narrow minded thought processes. His opinion in a nutshell is that Southerners are just a bunch of mean, dirty, homophobes. The unwashed, bigoted masses of the South! Tolerance begets tolerance folks. You can’t stomp and cry about people being intolerant to your cause/lifestyle if you are just as intolerant of others! The pot and the kettle and all that stuff…..ya know?

  91. He did say he wouldn’t treat anyone who was different than him badly. It just wasn’t for him. He isn’t bashing them like the nut jobs at west burro baptist. He also said he wasn’t the one to judge anyone that is Gods job. So as I understand your points some do not apply to this situation. I am Christian and yet I agree to let people love who they love, no one gets to judge you for it.

  92. Seems to me that those who proclaim to love all ‘sinner’s’ and justify talking about who is on God’s naughty list because it is ‘God’s word’ are only one step away from being perfect. The only thing standing in their way is the bible, because when the bible is removed the perceived justification is removed and there can be only love left. When they step away from the bible they can no longer torture others with the view that they are going to hell for who they love and when they step away from the bible they can no longer provide others (who are not as ‘loving’ as them) with justification for driving young men and women into self-hate and suicide for living in fear of who they are.

  93. Wow, been on a road trip today so I was catching up on FB. I am a Christian, heterosexual woman, but my brother who was raised the same way as me is a homosexual. Even though I didn’t know it at the time, I watched him struggle with homosexuality until he was in his late 30’s. Because of his struggle, I DO NOT believe homosexuality is a choice. I love my brother no matter what his sexual preference is. It disgusts and infuriates me to see other Christians spitting on them at rallies and telling them they are going to hell. Every human being on this earth deserves respect. Stop pointing fingers and work on yourself. My brothers name is I’m the book of life right beside mine and we will spend eternity in heaven together. Merry Christmas James, God bless you and yours. Love you.

  94. Well I see that you pick and choose just as all people do on what they want to know about Gods word. If you judge based on something God has already said is wrong then you are not passing wrong judgment. Your judgment is in agreement with God. God also states that when we allow him into our lives our sin full nature should die. So anything that is a sin is gone. Now it is not my will but thy will be done. Perfect surrender. Most Christians and fake believers don’t want to do this. Because our life is not our own any more when we allow him to transform us.

  95. You will be judged by the judgement with which you judge. This is a call to religious people to be very careful. James, I a very conservative theologically. I am versed in the Bible and have studied it for the past 25 years and I can tell you, you are right. Although I don’t know anything about your sin, I do know that my own heart is sinful and deceitful. My sin is before me everyday, I know that Christ’s blood has purified me, even though I commit the same sins again and again. The Westminster Catechism teaches “the chief end of man is to glorify God . . .” anything less in my life is sin. I can’t judge you because I am not the judge. I can only love you and thank you for your thoughtful post.

  96. While I agree with the majority of what you’ve said on this topic, I just want you to be informed so nobody fires back at you with info that takes you by surprise….Mr very judgemental Phil is actually highly educated. In fact he’s a former college English professor with a couple bachelors degrees as well as a masters degree. I know, it’s hard to believe lol!

    1. His whole family is smart. Phil could have played in the NFL. Their beards give people the impression they are backwoods country boys. They are all educated and were millionaires before A&E showed up. It’s an act most of it.

  97. Well, for a gay dood I applaude you sir! You come from a promiscuous point of view! Here is my lil ole southern point of view! Poor baby! Try being a whore at age 4??? Raped n pillaged as a southern female child! I could go on like u did in ur vomit! But my 18 yr old son just came home for the first time since he graduated n enlisted at 17 to defend your right to voice your opinion ! Say thank you Evan! Good night n God Bless! By the way, I raised my son well enough that I can tell u that he said he loves you!. God Bless! N that is meant from the heart !!!!

  98. First and foremost, like most southern states Louisiana is a right to work state. As his employer A&E enjoys significant privileges in their employee relationship. In this case this the employee demonstrated conduct contrary to company policy and was let go.if you’re fighting for employee rights move to Massachusetts and vote Democrat to protect employee rights

  99. Perfect…just perfect.
I’m not going to identify as gay or straight, ’cause who really cares…? I love everything you say here. America should keep these words in mind as we raise our children…

  100. Please don’t bash louisiana people . I am a Louisiana native and I shower daily , am educated and love my indoor plumbing and do not live in a swamp. I have several gay friends and i love them dearly. Just BC one person from la put a bad taste in your mouth doesn’t mean we are all like that. Thanks and Much love .

  101. Phil does not hate gays nor does he judge them. He was just stating his beliefs because he believes in the bible. Also, I respect you and your beliefs but I believe (from what the bible says) is that you’re right! God wouldn’t make you gay if he would just condemn you for it later. We all have free will. I believe being gay is a choice but then again, it is what I personally believe. I know a lot of gay people and I love them and couldn’t imagine hating them. I enjoyed reading your article and your take on the subject so thanks for sharing! I hope you have a great holiday! God bless.

  102. All this proves is that you have no understanding of his comments. Its disingenous at best to take a small part of his comments and equate them to WBC. He never expressed hate and you cannot point to a single statement he made that even came close to being close to what Westboro believes. If his statements offended then so be it. Let’s not make them into something more hateful than they were intended.

  103. Jake…Loved your article. But just as an experiment I took a couple of paragraphs and exchanged a few words. The results are interesting. You…may have become what you hate. (CHANGES ARE IN CAPITAL LETTERS)

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’m a REDNECK. Every time I mention that in a blog a few people message me saying “I didn’t know you are a REDNECK,” and I want to unfriend them…so yeah I’m a REDNECK…and here is my take on this controversy.

Let’s start with what appears to be a little known fact. JAKE is from GREENVILLE OR NEW YORK OR ASHEVILLE.. and is Gay. Shocking I know! So if that didn’t give you some sort of insight into his line of thinking before he made his comments…well…bless your heart. GREENVILLE has never been the nation’s beacon of progressive human rights and GAY’S STILL FLY THE “RAINBOW” FLAG. Anytime you have to defend something by saying it doesn’t represent hate, that should be a cue to stop flying it. (My swastika doesn’t represent hate either) ((sarcasm))

Let’s also point out that this is a INTERNET BLOG and therefore it should not be scripted…let me repeat, it is a INTERNET BLOG! JAKE was never elected by anyone to speak for anyone…he is a private citizen that a whole lot of other private citizens like to follow on the INTERNET…If JAKE were some elected official I would be the first in line complaining. But he isn’t. He represents a group of people who are known for their phobias…of black people, showers, the English language, indoor plumbing…among other things…so why are we surprised he hates REDNECKS? If you are outraged that he is in Media after saying what he said, try watching CNN for more than 3 minutes…

    1. Your name is Actually James…sorry about that. Perhaps it was my “Southern/Redneck” intellect that didn’t catch it.

  104. James everything we do is not a sin. Good loves everyone, Plain and simple. Your signs are since less and a ploy for attention. Once more thlng, why would you want to defriend some just because they said, they didn’t know you were gay? Does a person have to be gay to be your friend? Hum!

  105. A different quote from Phil…
“I myself am a product of the 60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior.

Pay attention to that last paragraph. He doesn’t hate gay people. Just not a fan of what they do in the bedroom. Is that wrong? No.
I think that’s where people have it wrong. Gays are people too, and should be viewed AS PEOPLE. You treat me nice, I treat you nice.
It’s a nice blog, and you have a right to express your views, but it needs to be said that there are Christians out there who actually follows Jesus’ command to love one another. Hate and judging we’re not a teaching of Christ.

  106. A good friend of mine sent me a link to your blog and jokingly asked if it was Me that wrote this. After reading it I would have to say if this were a petition I would sign my name to it. Bless you!
It’s sad to see in some of the comments above (just skimmed) that some people are not getting it. They are arguing semantics and specifics and not seeing the larger scope of (I believe) what you are saying.

    – your fellow fag, queer, homo, sodomite – Jim

  107. The redneck’s comments didn’t put him in trouble with the law, just his employers. Yay for A & E for responding to comments that are totally unacceptable. Why should they hang on to him and let their network go down? Free speech has limits in private enterprises, and Phil is not a victim . . . just an idiot.

  108. No one complaining about Phil has read the full GQ interview. All everyone heard was win starts with the gays. And that’s all everyone heard. He did mention lots of other sins. But no one heard past the word gay. If you would have read the article you would have read all the other sins he mentioned , you would have read where he wouldn’t treat anyone different just because of their sin, and you would have also read where he did say its not his place to judge. He is simply stating truth and people who hate truth will obviously be offended. I have sin, we all have sin. And when our sin is mentioned we all get scared, be because we know its sin and we either change or we don’t. That’s us and no one to judge. Truth hurts me , as well as others who know their sin. Read the full article before you all assume exactly what he thinks. He’s been condemned because all everyone heard was about being gay!

  109. I am so for this blog!!! Finally someone gets it right. The generation who sat in the bed of dads truck with our friends and no seatbelts, on the way back from swimming, the generation who played outside and made mud pies and played hockey in the streets are raising wimpy kids. Everyone is so afraid of this and that that we’ve stopped living. I agree, this “news” is not news!!! We need to turn our attention back to what’s important and focus on what matters. I am my best friend is gay, and he doesn’t let things bother him and I love that. You are awesome and keep up the good work!!

  110. Do you People know that Phil didn’t write the Bible. 1 Corinthians 6:9, speaks of this. He is just a messenger. Whenever something does not suit ones life-style here they come like a band of idiots. Peace

  111. Let’s not group all people who live in Louisiana in the same category. I was born, raised, and still reside in Louisiana. My parents brought me up in a Christian home. There are a few of us left in this great state that still believe it is not okay to judge others.

  112. All people serve a master in some form or another. Phil’s master is the Lord God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. The master you serve is the master you obey. Phil was asked a question and he replied obediently with the Word of God. If someone doesn’t like the way Phil obeyed, why don’t they go to the source of the their opposition and place their complaint there. I’m sure God would love to discuss the matter with them.
PS. It’s not Phil that people have the problem with, its God’s moral truth. Phil is just the physical target for their emotions.

  113. I agree with 98% of this. I don’t believe God made gay people gay. It is a sin. Just as murder is a sin. So there for it is a choice. If a man is attracted to a man the attraction is not the sin. The sexual act is the sin so like the rest of us you have to refrain from that sin. I also don’t agree that Phil said hr hates gays. He said he disagrees with gays. He believes being gay is a sin and so therefore he is stating a belief. He also said we are all to love one another. We don’t have to all live the same lifestyle to love one another. A gay man can still be friends with a straight Christian man without feeling judged by the Christian. We have no place to judge anyone because we all fall short of the glory of God. Case point …. Sin is a choice. Regardless of the sin.

    1. Why is it when ever someone wants to compare “sins” to being gay they pick some horrible act that causes injury to others? God made everyone, each person in made the way that God intended. So if the person is gay, they God made him/her that way. There is a major difference between someone hurting another person and two adults who want to be together. So many people have posted this type of comparison and then type, but I am not judging anyone. Hmmm, if you compare murder to being gay, how is that not a judgment?

    2. Just for the record Clara, there are scientific studies that have shown that being gay can actually be caused by a different firing of parts of the brain. Therefore, being that God made all people, and we tend to believe that God gave us our ailments as a test of our strength, God did make gay people gay. Just saying.

    3. This is exactly what I was going to say. I have gay friends that I worked well with on a daily basis, and I have distant family members who are gay, and I love them, but I still believe it is a sin to be gay. I know people who were born alcoholics…it doesn’t mean that living that lifestyle should be accepted by others, even though we love the person.

  114. He was representing a private corporation under contract and then saying things which go against the values of that corporation in an independent venue. That’s the problem. If I said that my boss’ beliefs were ridiculous in a local newspaper, I’d probably be looking for another job. To say that being gay is a sin implies that being gay is a choice, which all gay people (and hopefully most straight people) know is false, otherwise we’d all be able to prove it by choosing the opposite of whatever we’re enjoying. This is the same battle which alienated gay people have fought for years, trying to help people understand who we are….and then some guy comes along and kicks us down again. If he were in the street, talking to his friends, then I wouldn’t care. If they’d invite me into the conversation, I’d try to defend my stance, but I wouldn’t presume to trample on his beliefs as a Christian. But, as you said, you’re not a Christian if you cherry-pick little bits from the Old Testament, when you really should be follow the New Testament, as it is literally a testament to Christ’s beliefs of universal love and compassion.

  115. I don’t mean to stir up anything. In fact, I enjoyed reading this post, but Phil never said he hates gays. He never even implied it. He said it’s a sin. He also said he loves all creation and that God is the only one who can judge. Again, I don’t want to stir up. He also claimed that he himself would not inherit the Kingdom of God because he used to be an alcoholic, drug-addict. I agree with most of your article, but just wanted to clarify a few things. You mentioned Westboro Baptist Church haha. As a Christian, I think that those people aren’t actually Christians. They believe God “hates fags”, but hate is evil and God holds up all that is good. So they’re saying God is evil. So really God loves everyone, all creation, and Jesus would be the first to walk this earth and embrace homosexuals as He embraces everyone else. Just some thoughts on some different issues.

  116. As a Christian from the south, I have to say that not everyone from the south is “redneck.” It’s also not an insult to call anyone a redneck. In fact hardly anyone knows the true meaning of redneck anymore. Let me show you now, before you try insulting anyone else. The real definition can be found in the following link:

    http://www.timothydeanblog.com/apps/forums/topics/show/2915547

If you didn’t already know this, then learn it. The real rednecks of this country helped change the labor laws to the way they’ve been since the early 1900’s and it is a proud term. I don’t even know if any are still alive, but I will say “thank you, sir, for helping to develop this great country.

Now, here is my Christian opinion on this matter. Which I will share in another link, because I could’nt put it better.

    http://prayeatcreate.wordpress.com/2013/12/19/everyone-else-is-sharing-their-opinion-on-this-heres-mine/

We are Christian’s, not haters, not bullies, and most of all not perfect.

Tolerance, I’ll tell you now tolerance is as sketchy as anything out there. It has no rules, and no guidelines, and seems to include everyone except for the Christian population. I’m sorry, but I’d like to share just one more thing I read. My girlfriend wrote this one and it speaks of the constant battle that we, Christians, fight in this world that is supposed to be becoming “tolerant.” Because it would be too long I’m seperating each line of the poem with a slash mark.

Not now, / Give it time, / You’ll be fine in a minute. / Just walk it off, / Don’t pay attention to that. / Count to ten, / Take a deep breath. / Do you remember when? / Just don’t stress! / Did you notice? / It doesn’t get better over night. / Did you notice? / It’s still not all right. / I’m sick of pretending nothing hurts, / And I’m sick of being strong! / From my perspective, none of this works, / But I parrot it like a bad song. / I can’t have an opinion because it might offend you, / You, who say you’re so discriminated against! / Have you ever looked from the other side’s view? / Have you seen the treatment we get? / I’m a conservative and a Christian, / I even follow my Bible, / But my loving heart is sick of your discrimination / Against my religion, against your rival. / I’m not out to hate, / To put a red ex on peoples’ happiness, / But I have a conviction of wrong and right, / And I’m not compromising because you’re offended by it! / You refuse to compromise,
And then tell me why everything I believe is incorrect, / But if I even mention a different thought on your deepest ties, / I’m a bigot, a homophobe, and jerk with only malintent. / So tell me how you’re so accepting— / That is, unless I disagree, / And remind me of all the benefits and blessings / That I get from following only the path you see. / I’m tired of speeches on tolerance / When the only tolerance is for you. / I give every person an open ear and a second chance, / But I’m supposed to keep my thoughts quiet until they line up with your view. / So yes, we do not agree, / But I don’t even care about that! / I can’t get over how much hypocrisy / Is reiterated over and over again. / You judge me on my way of life, / But I’m not even allowed a single thought about yours / Because I’m just “too far” in my political shift to the right / Because, clearly, the left is par for the course. / Well, I’m at my wits end / And a little bit out of compassion. / I’m tired of it being ok for me to be offended, / While you are allowed every possible pass. / So if I stop talking to you, / Believe me, it’s just my “closed-minded” ways / Because I’m sick of having to sift through / To find the understanding, the decency, and the tolerance that’s supposed to mark the “good people” / of the United States these days.

Tolerance is a lie, stop shoving it our way without even a possible thought of returning the favor.

  117. No one is born gay because no one has sexual desires at birth. So you could say that your DNA was coded for you to prefer the same sexual orientation as yourself. I could be born to be attracted to 8-year-old boys. I could be born to be an alcoholic, or a lazy bum (and many people are). All sin is inherited…it’s all coded in our DNA because we are human beings. It’s still sin and God still hates sin. But Jesus died for all sinners and loves us all! We are still required to fight against it…to try to be better than ourselves, not to embrace it. Christians do understand what being gay is and what it means. Love the sinner, hate the sin.

    1. Really? You aren’t attracted to anyone? You’re wrong. Spreading hate and intolerance pushes people further away from god too.

      1. I did. I was not attracted to anyone when I was born either. At one point did you decide who you are attracted to and who you aren’t? You didn’t. It’s natural. It’s in you’re DNA. You were born that way.

  118. Hey bro, I am also a christian and agree on your view of what christianity is….however all sin is sin you are correctIin saying this. However it all leads you to death as in it seperates you from God. However we do see in the bible in tye gospel of matthew Christ referring to sodom and gomorra and telling the people they will suffer even greater for the sin they comitted than that of sodom and gomorras sin. Yes we all sin , and yes we all need forgiveness, and yes we all should love another as Christ did to us.

  119. I was also born an alcoholic. Do you think it’s okay for me to live that lifestyle? To show up to work drunk, to pass out on the streets, to steal money for a drink? Sin leads to more sin. Some men are born killers, angry and full of hate. So do we allow them to kill, or do we condemn the sin and put them in jail, while still loving them and trying to help them?

  120. I appreciate your post, James. I agree with most of what you said. I would love to continue our conversation, but I have to get things for dinner. I wouldn’t mind finishing our conversation at some other time, but I do not want to put my contact information out here for everyone to see. If there is a way to send me yours, and you would like to talk further, please let me know. Jesus loves you and so do I. 🙂

  121. People like you make me sick! I could not read passed the 1st paragraph! 1st I don’t care if your gay! 2nd you have no right to judge people stereo type where they come from and how they act or think! I myself was raised in the mountains of East Tennessee! I consider myself to be a redneck , hill jack or whatever term you want to label but to claim you know how people like us thing. Is no different than me saying all gays have Aids. I have a African American boyfriend for years! I have many friends that are gay bi and trans! To stereo type is very childish! Willie Roberston himself has a mixed son that carries his name! I am sorry you are so closed minded about the southern heritage, maybe it comes from you being picked on while growing up? Which all children go through! You sir are no different! But it is your opinion just as this one is mine!

  122. He never said that he hates gay people. All he said was that he felt the behavior was a sin. He didn’t condemn any individual, or their feelings, he said that the behavior was wrong, according to principles he believes in. Love the sinner, hate the sin. He responded to a direct question about what he considered sinful, he didn’t go on a homophobic rant.

  123. I don’t personally agree with a gay lifestyle. I mean even a 3 year old can put shapes together. But I have gay friends and family and all of them know two things very well… 1. I don’t hate them in any way. 2. I am not the least bit “phobic” of them. The one thing in this world and seemingly most abundantly in this country that I and every other person should be afraid of is the stupidity that you spout! You are an absolute idiot!

    1. Matt don’t play In to this crap. This is just some veiled attempt to be PC, as much as this fella talks about it being bad. He made all his little funnies about the swamp and rednecks, and made his littl frosted tips feel better. Just ignore this and it will go away like a bad VD this cat caught in LA

  124. Good little rant, yes he should have his opinion and yes you should have yours. But how is it any different, you saying he’s afraid of what he doesn’t know, you obviously don’t know Christianity very well, judge not thy neighbor very well or common sense either.

  125. I think you wrote a great article, but there was one thing I disagree strongly with. You said that you tend to defriend people who don’t know that you’re gay. I find it ridiculous that anybody considers who they choose to sleep with as their defining characteristic and that anybody they associate with should be aware of their preferences in partners.

Just the other day, I found out that a coworker who is a relatively quiet guy was gay. It’s possible my gaydar is incredibly bad, but I just don’t consider any body’s sexuality my concern.

    1. I don’t de friend anyone. It was meant as a joke that people who really know me should already know that.

  126. As a Southern-born missionary living in Europe, I’ve got to say I agree with the vast majority of what you’ve posted. No one has mentioned (that I saw- someone did touch on it, though) that the point of the scripture he quoted with the long list of sins was meant to show how all sin is equal- that’s why homosexuality, greed, and slander are on the same list- to level the ‘sin field’ as it were. Just because *your* (and I mean the generic *you*, not you, James the blogger) sin makes me feel better about my own because in my mind, there’s a hierarchy/sliding scale of sin is NO CAUSE for my judging you (generic you) at all- I should be loving you, because we’re in the same situation.

So, naïve as it sounds, I truly believe that I can think/say that according to the text I consider to be my life map (the Bible), homosexuality (acting on it- not having feelings) is a sin, but that’s the end of my discussion with you (generic you- English really needs a word for ‘generic you’ other than ‘one’) in the sense that (a) I’m not the one to try and judge people by my standards and (b) I’m going to love you, period. (well, unless you’re just a bastard who’s no fun to be around :-). Plain and simple- disagreement should not automatically be considered hatred, it should be seen as a way of opening up a dialogue (one that includes learning how to work/live together in the world, not the kind of discussion that’s actually just ‘us’ (of whichever side) telling ‘them’ (of the other side) how they are wrong.

The only thing I wanted to point out was the history of the swastika- it’s over 3000 years old and was a symbol of life and good luck. The word “swastika” comes from the Sanskrit svastika – “su” meaning “good,” “asti” meaning “to be,” and “ka” as a suffix. 🙂 Really strange/interesting how things evolve to mean completely different things over time…

My favorite saying about all this is, ‘There is one thing we won’t tolerate, and that’s intolerance!

    Have a Merry Christmas!

  127. I was raised in the Northwest in a small town full of white prejudice religious people and yet somehow I never agreed with their narrow viewpoints. I have a ton of gay friends and don’t believe people should be judged or punished based on their sexuality, color of skin, religion, etc. It’s no one’s business but your own and people just need to open their eyes. Nice piece, I enjoyed it.

  128. My major issue with this article is the use of “distraction” as a concept prohibiting more useful rhetoric amongst the masses. In world where Rush Limbaugh’s opinions and Fox broadcasts are regarded as “news”…Phil Robertsons comments are much more than a distraction…they are a reflection of the ‘truth’ as it is understood by millions of Americans. Its much more dangerous than a distraction for most people, its their reality. Plato has a cave set up to explain it 😉

  129. First of all you said “God made me Gay”, God didn’t make you Gay. Second, this country, matter of fact this world is screwed up because no one has any respect for themselves or anyone else. Everyone wants to point the finger when something happens or goes wrong and no one wants to work for anything anymore. There is so many Government set asides for people that want something for nothing and it has fueled generations past, present, and future. Why would anyone want to work anymore. You can make a possible $ 65,000.00 a year with full benefits on welfare. As far as the gay thing, every person was born either a man or a woman, you either have part A or part B, God made you human, it’s your choice and your lifestyle that made you Gay not GOD!!!!!!

  130. A truly statement of wise words chosen carefully to clarify a strong but true point. ( I agree)
Well said, well put, well wrighten
I’m gay from the swamps and bayous of Louisiana. I grew up in a southern Babtist Church with all the old traditions some true some not, but I now live in Houston and attend the Lakewood
Church. I believe there is a God and I believe in our Lord Jesus Christ who died for our sins.
All I ask that no one accuse the bayous nor the swamps of Louisiana to define each person/citizens to be in the all of the same thinking.

  131. Live how you want to live. Everybody sins from time they open there eyes weather it be adultery, killing, abuse stealing etc. I don’t judge nobody that’s not my place. I have a lot of friends that are gay/ liesbian and I will not treat them no more different than my own family member. So people shut up about life. It’s been going on alone time why now it’s all new because some redneck voiced his opion.

  132. Dear Mr. Akers,

I read your post with interest. I was hoping I would read something insightful and intelligent. Some of what you wrote was, but some was just as ignorant and hateful as what you claim Mr. Robertson and others like him say.

First of all, calling someone a redneck is hateful. It is a derogatory, mean, bigoted and nasty term. Just because it is used by people to indicate people from very rural areas doesn’t make it less derogatory or hateful. And, for the record, if you would do a bit of research you would see that the term does not even refer to someone from Louisiana. The term originally referred to people from the Ozarks or the Appalachian Mountains, not Louisiana. Has it been used to refer to others, yes, but almost always with nastiness so it is hateful to use.

Secondly, you do what most people seem to want to do whenever a person of a specific faith quotes the Bible about homosexuality, you lump all Christians together and then used the lowest, most hateful and nasty group to compare them to. Christians aren’t the only religious people who preach against homosexuality. And, yes, I know you wrote about Christians because Mr. Robertson is a Christian, but it is very small-minded to lump all Christians together and to try to tell Christians what they are supposed to believe.

Why not actually TALK to Christians who disagree with you. Find out what they truly believe instead of generalizing. Why stereotype? Why hate?

Every time I see a story about gay rights the only people (except for the Westboro Baptist Church) that I see being hateful are the gay people. I’ve seen them scream and yell and call people names. During the Prop 8 voting they even burned a Bible on the books of a church. THAT is hate.

As long as you and people like you on both sides of the debate call names and spread hate NOTHING will change. Things will only change when people stop ALL of the hate and ALL people are held to standards of loving thy neighbor. I can guarantee you that if you met Mr. Robertson or anyone in his family they would not show you anything but kindness. Would they debate you, sure. But what’s wrong with learning what the other side thinks. Only then can you truly understand who THEY are, which obviously you don’t.

And finally, disagreeing with someone is NOT hate. Speaking that disagreement is NOT hate. Saying that the Bible says something is a sin is NOT hate, nor is it judging someone. Judging is calling them hateful names. Judging is not even trying to find out anything about them before you make up your mind to dislike them. And you are the one who is doing all of that.

  133. i did not read all of the comments on this guys post but i did read his post and it just sounds like Mr. James what ever ur name is, you need to just grow up. By the way james if u r truly a Christian then god did not make u gay, you disided to like guys. no one here made u gay, u made the chose to like men. so as the bible says turn the other cheek. Im probably the youngest person to comment on this and you all need to grow up. what is watching tv gona do for u in the long run. every one needs to grow up and get the fuck off the couch, get the hell off of facebook, and twitter and every this else that doesnt support health brain function. get out side learn how to use a gun, cut up fire wood, go camping, work on cars or truck, plant flowers so on and so forth. so Mr James what ever u last name is im from Wisconsin so what r u gona call me, sense Phil is from down south so that makes him a redneck right away. I would like to know my nick name is now sense you have names for where people live now days. by calling him a redneck now u just became a bully. what do u think god would say to u now. I really dont think that u r a Christian, i think that u r just a big over grown baby that needs his diaper and need attention. O By the way to i have plenty of homosexual friends to and i hang out with them all the time and im straight. but i dont judge people just like you r in this fucking stupid post. so I think every one needs to grow up and mind there own business. but thats just me!!! sorry for the spelling every one reading this haha

  134. I think you have some of you’re facts wrong there bud! Phil didn’t say he hated gays and what he said was far from that and he didn’t say he disliked them either! He basically said he rather a girls parts than guys! Saying he’s not gay pretty much. Oh and the stereotypical comments come on, there known phobias ? Like really! You cant assume that because there rednecks! Also this day in age is a lot different than what it was years ago so most rednecks probably have a different way of life in this age than what did many years ago! If you’re gay and dont want people judging you stop judging other people!

  135. I applaud and salute you Sir! I have great, loving, caring; friends who would give the clothes off their backs for me. I judge them not by any sexual or race labels but as my best friends who have been there for me in my worst times of need. I agree with you; don;t like Phil, just turn the channel! We all have the rights to our opinions and views and may not be in the spotlight as he is. Human is human! God made us each diverse and that is what makes the world we live in not only a pleasure but a trial at times. It is up to us as individuals to choose where our hearts and stand on each issue in life.

  136. Homosexuality is sexual deviance. There are many forms of sexual deviance (e.g, sadism, masochism, aldutery, pedophilia, beastiality…), and each is as bad as any other. I don’t necessarily believe that people choose to be tempted by these abominations, nor do I believe that people were born with these predispositions, but rather there is an event or series of events that occur within one’s own life that proliferates these thoughts which become temptations and ultimately, if one is not strong enough or has no inclination to stop them, then the acts of deviency happen. That doesn’t make it less of a sin. The kleptomaniac doesn’t choose to feel the compulsion to steal, but he/she does it anyway. I guarantee that if he steals from you, then you will be offended. I teach my children to obey the law, first and foremost, God’s law and then Man’s law. I will teach them that lying is wrong, stealing is wrong, and among many other things, homosexuality is wrong. I don’t care what you do. I pray that God has mercy on your soul, but I get fighting mad when I see that the “gay community” along with everyone in the media is fighting me tooth and nail trying to undermine my parental authority and convince me and my children that sexual deviancy (homosexuality) is OK. It is not OK. It is no better than lying, stealing, or even murder in the eyes of the Lord.

  137. I have had such mix feelings about this whole thing, but the one thing I kept coming back to is “why does anyone care?” I kept thinking, “he’s a reality TV personality, why do people care so much?” I even said to my husband, “I could understand if this were an elected official, but for goodness sake, he’s really a “nobody” in the big picture of people we should care about what they say.” I just wanted to say that your post really put into words all of the things I’ve been thinking, so thank you for putting it out there. I wish people would start learning to speak to one another in love so that intolerances can be overcome without feelings of being attacked. I’m tired of both sides of every argument in today’s society is so filled with hatred. Whatever happened to just listening to what other people have to say and respecting them even if their views are different? We can’t all be the same person, think the same things or act the same way, so instead we need to express love, empathy and concern for others even if we don’t agree with them.

  138. I would be proud to call you my friend. You are so right on about all of it. And I am an ex of a proud out gay man, and we are raising our children together. I would love to see him with someone just like you!

  139. As a southern Christian woman I believe that Jesus only asks us to accept him to get to heaven. As long as you believe in Him and have a PERSONAL relationship with him then heaven will be your home. Ask forgiveness as you feel lead not as others tell you. I do believe homosexuality is a sin but I don’t judge that anymore than gluttons, adulterers or any other sin. I judge my own and I have plenty to keep me busy. Heaven will be filled with those who have sinned and accepted Christ. That includes everyone who has accepted Christ no matter their sin.

  140. I don’t care if you are gay. Be gay. Can’t we just love one another? Why does everything have to turn into a fight with name calling on both sides. I guess it was to much to hope for that someone who has a platform on the news to offer peace and forgiveness. That’s how this cycle continues. You had a chance to make a positive change, and its sad to say you missed it. I still love you, and I wish you nothing but the best.

  141. Well said! I wish I could shake your hand! Finally common sense :). Wishing you nothing but happiness, Merry Christmas

  142. Bravo, James! ((hug)) I’m with you through and through. I don’t remotely agree with Phil’s statement, but I will defend his right to say what he wants. I’m heterosexual, but I’ll defend the right of others to love whomever they choose. A mutual respect for others’ individuality is all we need. We’d all get along much better with that mentality.

  143. I agree with you. I am a heterosexual woman, but… as a general rule, I love people of all ethnicities, gender, and sexual preferences. I believe in equality and human rights. Kudos to you for all that you said, keep on standing up for your beliefs and the rights that we have been given. My family and I will support you 100% here in Greenwood, SC.

  144. I’m a Pagan Southerner who has love for all people regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion. I do not care what Phil said, and actually feel like I am defending him quite a lot even though I do not agree with his views. I am also quite annoyed from all the hate slinging from my gay friends. Just let the man be. Let his fans follow him and go about your merry way.

But I must admit while I agreed with a lot of what you said, I feel much of what you attempted to convey was clouded by your stereotypes and overall sarcastic attitude. I think you had a powerful message that was lost on delivery. I know that it has gotten a lot of people to your site, gone viral as they say, but I would have much preferred to see the virility from a message of love rather than a message that only perpetuates the idea of name calling and stereotypes.

Keep spreading the truth, but try to do it in a way that does not alienate the people who need to hear your message the most.

    Much Love
    Crystal

  145. I really enjoyed reading your take on this. Personally, I can’t stand the show to begin with, but that’s my opinion. I care so much about the whole thing that I don’t even know what Phil said. (I even had to scroll up to make sure I had his name right) The only reason I read what you posted was because it showed up in my FB news feed. Ah, well, you love who you love. It doesn’t make you any less of a person. Merry Christmas!!

  146. Well James, I agree with some of your points but not others. Many have taken things out of context. He was talking about sin and sinful behavior. Personally who you sleep with is your business not mine. You also have to understand he is a southern baptist not always the most tolerant of faiths. This whole thing is much to do about nothing. He did not call for anyone’s demise or to hate anyone he talked about sin. Such as your choice of partners and mine as a single heterosexual male that does believe in unmarried sex. So James welcome to the sinners club. And I do know one thing about Phil is that he will be praying for us.

  147. I am going to agree with you on most and I love your care free attitude about the whole situation and for being pro ‘everyone has a right to their own opinion.’ My step son is gay and I’ve been in his life since he was 5 and he’s about to turn 20 in May. He came out when he was 15. I never once stopped loving him nor did I treat him any differently, and the same goes for his father. We were raised Christian and attend a non denominational church (RWOC) where everyone is welcome:) We don’t understand his sexual preference and probably never will but hey it’s his life and I know of only one judge, and that would not be me! Regarding your description of southerners, I myself am from Greenville SC and I have never had a phobia for another race. If you were referring to the southerners around here then I wanted to let you know that I have dated outside of my race and married outside of my race. I have indoor plumbing, I do take showers and also speak the English language very well. Lol! Maybe you were referring to the group of southerners that are in his area? Also, I wanted to mention that Phil never said he hates gays, not even once. He just doesn’t get it and as a straight man he never will. He surely follows his Bible and believes in it whole heartedly and that’s his right. It’s also his right when asked a question to answer it honestly. He doesn’t sugar coat anything so Some things may come across rough but I do not believe that that man hates gays or anyone for that matter. Is there really something wrong with him saying he prefers vagina over anus? I don’t think so, but then again that’s just my opinion. That was a great read James! Merry Christmas to you! 🙂

  148. First of all he never said he hated gays he was just stating what the bible says and secondly you said you didn’t want him judging you we’ll you are doing they same thing with judging him

  149. Love this! An actual common sense, level head response!!! Bet no one saw that coming. I am sure you have had your fair share of whiner comments to your blog, post, tweet, whatever its termed, I truly enjoyed reading your commentary. Nice work!!

  150. I’m 30 from Spartanburg, have spent my whole life here, sadly. I know it doesn’t matter but I’m not gay either. I’m proud that there are level headed people like you around and I agree with almost everything you have written. I’m sure there are people saying bad things about you, but seriously, this blog post makes me proud. Almost everyone has someone gay close to them, be it family or friend. If a gay family member ever emerges from the robertsons, the media will eat them alive. Keep writing man, the people of gsp support you! Great job!!!!

  151. THANK YOU EVERYBODY HAS CHOICES SO IF GAY IS IT THEN THATS YOU IM STRAIGHT THATS ME I DONT HATE YOU FOR IT AND I AM SURE YOU DONT ME WE ARE HERE ON EARTH TOGETHER AND WHEN WE DIE WE WILL BE IN HEAVEN OR HELL TOGETHER MAY AS WELL ACCEPT IT AND GO ON

  152. Sweetheart. I was in the military for 20 yrs, black, Hispanic , oriental, every race everywhere … And gay, straight , and otherwise . I love you as you are. When true Christians make allegations than they are it Christians. However, Phil pointed out that homosexuality is a sin. That is according to the Bible. He as well I , have been taught to hate the sin but love the sinner. I love you as I do ALL people and if everyone would keep their eye on that , we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. Have a Merry Christmas

  153. Phil was speaking out against multiple forms of sin…adultery being one of them. He didn’t belittle or name call. He simply answered a question. And you are right he had every right to answer the way he did. But your tone of backwoods Louisiana=uneducated is a little brash and a broad stereotype. I would like to cordially ask you to please reconsider. This man whom you insinuate has lacking mental capacity because he lives too far beneath the Mason Dixon line…has a Bachelor degree in physical education and a Master of Arts in Education. The moniker of “redneck” is not, in itself, offensive. The stereotype that is constantly promoted, however, is. I hold a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education with a Master of Education in teaching the Gifted and Talented and hail from the Spartanburg area. Yet when I speak, my “accent” somehow mysteriously cloaks my mental fortitude when I’m in public due to this driven stereotype pushing the perception that Southerners are inherently stupid…or one might say, people assume that my drawl indicates that my mental acuity must flow as slowly as the molasses that drips from my biscuits. I must also add that I have quite an affinity for showers and indoor plumbing. I have not one issue with African Americans nor gays. I do find SOME Christians to be over zealous, judgmental bigots, but reserve that classification for those who individually earn the title. Phil did not go into a rant about the gay lifestyle, so how do you justify going into a rant about his? (And before judging me as an outsider redneck who wouldn’t “understand” please consider that you don’t know what life I have led. I firmly and vehemently defend my second amendment rights to bear arms, drive a Toyota Avalon, have no problem wearing Real Tree camo, I am 43, listen to Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, believe in God, and believe that pure true love can happen regardless of gender and once led an “alternate” lifestyle. I dare say there is no mold that will hold me.)

  154. Can’t say I agree with everything you wrote. But maybe that’s the point: as a society we’re all so busy trying to prove we’re right that we’ve lost our ability to respect and connect. So let me just say: nicely done, James. Thanks for sharing your perspective with a chuckle rather than a shout.

  155. I feel like you wrote this article without even reading his interview. Phil quoted the Bible & stated that was what he was taught, so his belief is that being gay is a sin. He never said he hated anyone & said he would never be disrespectful to anyone regardless of what their differences might be. He didn’t make any racial comments; you’ll notice that the NAACP didn’t bat an eye at the interview. GLAAD is slowly turning into extremists like PETA. These days, a straight person can’t utter the word “gay” without GLAAD wagging their fingers in their face & screaming intolerance. There are other opinions in this world & just because they don’t agree with your lifestyle doesn’t mean they’re homophobic. Your comments about southern people are however offensive & intolerant. Way to stop the cycle of hate.

  156. Just to point out, there is a “sin scale” in Christianity. However, loving another woman or man is not differentiated as a higher sin, they are both equally bad in the teachings.

  157. You hit the nail on the head on the political correctness (PC) issue in US. It’s gotten entirely out of hand. Social media and reality tv has provided a new outlet to voice opinions quicker. People need to realize that when comments are made on the whim like this, they need to recognize that it is not meant to hurt them, personally. It is just someone’s quick interjection to their true thoughts and mentality on worldly issues. Nothing wrong with that.

Love the comment, “We all need to grow up [as a nation]”. This nonsensical news does deter the focus off of the real issues in this country. While I don’t agree on your delivery of insults on populous of Louisiana based on a single family on A&E, your post has gotten the attention to a large audience about the PC issue in America.

  158. I lived in Greenville, SC for 9 months back in the early 90’s and heard Yankee Go Home so many times I did. Living happily back in Ohio ever since. When you have a “Civil War re-enactment solider” come to a Boy Scout meeting and talk about killing Yankees in graphic detail to little boys under 10 yrs old it’s time to go home! The war is over, you lost, move on!!! I think your Southern descriptions were right on the money!!

  159. Mr. Akers,
I have read your blog post about Mr. Phil Robertson, and although I believe you have every right to freely express yourself; I have to respectfully disagree with your take on this controversy. First of all, I am astonished in your familiarity of the citizens of the great state of Louisiana. “Phil is from Louisiana…and is a redneck”…”So if that didn’t give you some sort of insight into his line of thinking before he made his comments…” Stereotype much? I have to ask, would the statement given by Mr. Robertson be any different if he was say…a South Carolina redneck? Probably not, and this is why. Mr. Robertson did not make this statement based on his perceived redneck lifestyle. He made his statement based on the fact that he is a Christian man and stands by our God’s holy word. As a side note, the term “redneck” did not come from the sunburn on the back of Southern farmers’ necks. The word came about in Scotland in the 1640s as a term to describe the people who opposed the Church of England and wanted to be Presbyterians. They wore red scarves around their necks as a statement of their position. These Scottish immigrants traveled and settled in the American South bringing the term with them. In truth, these immigrants were supporters of the freedom of religion. This being the case I, too, Sir, am a redneck, and I love people of all different colors; all different languages; and I thank God for indoor plumbing; and I do not hate gays.
Your kind of people, see it can go both ways, mistake our viewpoint as judgment; our tolerance as required acceptance. There you are wrong. I do not know factually, but I am going to assume that in your declaration of your God that we are talking about one and the same. James 5:19-20 (NIV) says, “My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.” It’s not about judgment. It never was. It’s about saving souls. We, as Christians, hate no one. “Hate the sin, love the sinner.” We hate sin because God hates sin. It plagues our lives just as much as the next person. I agree with you, we are all guilty of sin. We sin every day, but it is through the wonderful grace of God and the crucifixion of his only son, Jesus Christ, that we can be washed clean and forgiven. Sir, I hate to burst your bubble, but homosexuality is a sin; as is my temper and impatience, but we’ll save that for another day. (NIV) Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Romans 1:26-27, Colossians 3:5-6, and Galatians 5:19-21 all speak out against the sin of homosexuality- and other sins as well, might I add. Let me be clear, it is not the act of homosexuality that condemns a person to Hell. It is the rejection of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ, which condemns a person to Hell. Once a person is washed clean through his acceptance, he will not want to live in sin anymore.
Also, Sir, you were not born gay. Sorry, didn’t happen. Just in case the Bible isn’t enough to convince you of that, how about science? Study after study has been conducted on this with identical twins; (who share the same DNA, by the way) one heterosexual, and the other homosexual. “Because identical twins are always genetically identical, homosexuality cannot be genetically dictated. “No-one is born gay,” he notes. “The predominant things that create homosexuality in one identical twin and not in the other have to be post-birth factors.” Dr. Whitehead, PhD. Let me elaborate on those “post-birth factors”. The word of God tells us that “Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.” Psalm 58:3 (NIV). The reason why homosexuality is not a given gift from God is because it is a manifestation of sin. Who lures us with sin? Satan, of course! We all have weaknesses, and Satan knows them more than anyone. He will do whatever it takes for us to succumb to these faults, and proudly drag us into the gates of Hell. He hates God, but he knows his powers are not comparable. Instead, he attacks God through us, His children, through sin.
Whether you agree or not, Mr. Akers, is your rightfully given choice. I am just merrily trying to help you gain perspective on what Christians actually believe. It is not out of hate that we do not agree with you lifestyle, but out of love. If we hated gays, then we wouldn’t want to share the words of God’s grace and glory to you. Who wants to spend eternity with someone they hate?

  160. Did you even read the GQ article? Phil did not say he hated gays nice did he say he was homophobic. All he said was that homosexuality was a sin just like many other things. He also went on to say that it wasn’t his place to judge, that’s the job of The Almighty. He also stated were to live one another and to deliver the good news from the Bible and it’s up to us to accept it or not.

  161. I would just like to say that being gay does not send you to hell. Nor does murder, drinking or any other sin. The only thing that keeps a person from the kingdom of Heaven is not accepting Jesus as your personal savior. God did not make you gay. You chose to be gay. Does that make Jesus love you any less? Absolutely not. All sins are equal in God’s eyes. Your being gay is no worse than me running around drinking, doing drugs, and sleeping around. God did not make me love doing those things. I chose to do those things. I am a Christian and I sin everyday of my life. Why? Because I’m not perfect. I’m human. God never expected me to be perfect. Having said that I would like to invite you and your man :0) to Newspring Church. There is one in Greenville. Have a wonderful Christmas!!

  162. Women with women. Men with men,” he said at one point (at 18:25 in the video below). “They committed indecent acts with one another, and they received in themselves the due penalty for their perversions.
“They’re full of murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant God-haters. They are heartless. They are faithless. They are senseless. They are truthless. They invent ways of doing evil.”

NOW THESE SOUND LIKE SOME HATING COMMENTS TO ME.. NOT MUCH LOVING GOING ON..

    1. He was referencing a passage in the Bible. Romans 1:26-30 KJV

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

      28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

  163. He was using the NIV in that video of Romans 1:26-32

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. 28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

  164. So you’re saying he doesn’t shower and that he’s a hillbilly redneck?? Well first of all you have no idea whether he showers or not and it’s no more right to judge the way he lives than it is for him to judge the way you live. He wasn’t “gay bashing”, he was asked a question and he answered. He never once said anything hateful or demeaning. He’s entitled to his beliefs and I support him for being honest and standing up for what he believes without being hateful about it. Some of the comments you made could be taken of greater offense than anything he said. Merry CHRISTMAS to you though and a wonderful New Year.

  165. Sorry brother you have it all wrong…Phil never once said he hated gays.search and study Gods word and meditate on it…ask God to save you and show you the way if you aren’t already saved….Don’t take peoples word for anything.. the Holy Spirit will show you the truth if you only allow him…I will be praying for you my friend…

  166. Well said. I do disagree with you saying he is in the same category as Westboro church. I think with the way Phil feels about this country and its service men and women, he probably hates what Westboro stands for and their actions. Those who protest at military funerals are trash IMO.

    1. One issue people aren’t discussing is how this so called freedom of speech affects people. My comments here aren’t really about Phil, but rather some comments back to james. More important, comments made to young people on a daily basis, read by young people on a regular basis.( Like this ridiculous discussion about what Phil from louisiana had to say). who are struggling with being gay. Teenagers are killing themselves at record numbers over this issue. To me that is more important than freedom of speech. Peoole saying you are going to burn in hell for being gay, making fun of you calling you fag, queer, etc. Being outcast at school, etc. As americans this should make us sick young people are dying because they feel no alternative. To me that is more important than freedom of speech. Its ok at times to keep your opinion to yourself, words can be very damaging at times.

  167. James,

Your post was really refreshing and encouraging. Honestly, this whole situation has gotten out of control. I agree with what you said in your post. I’m glad that not everyone is blaming Christianity. I don’t think Phil hates gays or is homophobic. He’s an old fashioned man who sticks to his guns (both literally and figuratively). But, I do think it could have been said more kindly and humbly than it was. It is not his call as to what God truly disapproves of. It’s God’s. So thank you. Thank you for speaking and doing it with class and intelligence.

  168. Wow, i didnt know you were gay. First off you are ignorant as shit. Secondly, nothing in his quote said he hated gays. He simply disagreed with your lifestyle. You say people need to be tolerable of your views and way of life but you are completely intolerable of anyones views that differ from yours. He is a religious man. Its a sin in the bible to be gay. Nothing wrong with him believing that. It is you that is spreading the “hate and fear” and all this other non-sense. This isnt even a case of making mountains out of molehills cause there was nothing wrong with what he said. This is a case of you contorting anything anyone says that differs from your beliefs into some outrageous fallacy that you then use to support your beliefs. I like how you dont even mention ANYTHING he says, you dont quote him and then try to break down exactly what you have an issue with. I probably can safely assume you are going off here-say and just trying to boost your blog by making outlandish accusations. You are pathetic. GLAD is pathetic. I actually KNOW several gay guys that have NO issue with what Phil said. They say the exact same thing. How can we expect respect for our beliefs and views when we are viewed as not respecting other peoples beliefs and go on the attack like GLAD did. You are a poor representation of your community my friend.

    1. He said Phil had a right to say what he wanted, so what are you talking about. I know James and he is by far reprenting the gay community in a positive manner. Like James said if you read it, Phil is entitled to his opinion as is James. Calling him ignorant as shit really says all we need to know about you. Grow up..

  169. Hey James,

I’ve read your post and also all the comments (mostly because I was curious but also because I had a couple hours to kill ;))
I’d like to say that I completely agree with you and applaud you for speaking so courageously. I don’t believe you chose to be a gay man. Just like I didn’t choose to be a brown woman. Why anyone would choose to go against the social grain and endure a life of adversity is beyond me. Those who believe otherwise are just making excuses for their bigotry.

Keep it up. I’m excited to read future blog posts 🙂

  170. While I think it great we live in a country with freedoms as we do, it would be nice if we could all step back and take a breath. I bet all of us have can be quoted saying something that will piss others off. People want to have equal rights so they fight for it. I think that I obtaining the rights we have so far such as Women’s rights , African Americans rights, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech, all required fights. In becoming part of our history they earned respect. I wish for our country’s sake we could really enjoy our time here on the planet, a one of its kind for all we know, without the hate for gays, for African American, for religion, ect. I consider myself a Christian and as a child of god I refuse to believe he punishes the good of heart. Who are we to judge if someone is a redneck or a gay. I’ve know and loved both and I would cry and bleed for both and many others. People don’t like others putting there beliefs in their faces then please stop enjoying your right to say it. Stop talking about your beliefs. Stop mingling with whom ever you choose. Stop complaining about our elected officials . Because if you can’t deal with people fighting for their right to be gay or redneck in this case you don’t deserve the other privledges this great country has provided from years of people standing up for themselves. There is simply too much time spent on these topics and not enough just letting people be beautifully different.

  171. South Carolina like Louisiana has its landmarks. If I had been told Mr. Akers was from South Carolina, could I guess the city, I would have got it in one guess!!!

  172. Mr. Akers, I enjoyed your words. I stumbled upon them trying to find the originator of the screen shot below of some words from a self-proclaimed gay person. I can’t find any originator, nor any reference to the right-wing site is linked in the posting I saw by the name of American Elephant. The whole thing is suspicious, but I found the words fascinating in their simplicity. I am not a religious person, but I like the way these words call out parties to this little spat on their own intolerance. There are many calling this essay out based on ‘there is no way a gay man would talk that way’, so I was hoping to get your take on it. Thanks for your time. http://therestlessreformed.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/photo.jpg

    1. Several people, mostly friends, sent me that article two days after I posted this blog. I’m not sure. Sounds very similar to mine and the title is the exact same. Very suspicious.

      1. I agree that it is suspicious. What I would really like to hear is how you feel about the words. I found them profound.
